Presentation transcript:

Read Write Inc All children are assessed by myself (Mrs Bethell) and grouped accordingly to where they are within Read Write Inc. I assess children on a regular basis to make sure they are making sufficient progress and are grouped correctly. We begin in the nursery to give every child the best opportunity to begin their Read Write Inc experience.

Set 1 Sounds Children are taught pure single sounds – perfect pronunciation. Each sound has a phrase to go with it to help children remember the sound. Through fred talk (freddy frog), children learn to read words just containing these taught sounds. How many fred fingers does mat have? m-a-t that’s right 3 fred fingers. Remember fred fingers are always on the hand we do not write with. When using fred we know that these words are known as green words. Any green word can be spelt out phonetically . Word time is also taught to enable children to spell using these taught sounds – fred fingers are used here. Lots of praise given at all times – faaaantastic! Nonsense words are introduced. Smeg. They are also green words Read Write Inc encourages children to work with partners and give partner feedback.

Ditties Ditties are introduced to the children once they know all of their set 1 sounds. Ditties only have the sounds in (phonemes) which contain sounds the children have been taught. Ditties enable children to read and write – hold a sentence. The cat sat on a mat. Red words are introduced slowly – REMEMBER you can’t fred a red! Red words contain GROTTY GRAPHEMES! A GROTTY GRAPHEME is a grapheme which does not fit into the rule of the complex speed sounds chart – for example, two. This has the oo sound (phoneme) but does not appear on the chart. Red words are not spelt how they sound.

Set 2 Sounds Now we move onto sounds containing more than one letter ( 2 letters one sound – ee or 3 letters one sound - igh). Again, children only read books containing sounds they have been taught. More use of the complex speed sounds chart being used. Chance to read, write and show off what they know within their reading and writing, also take back to their afternoon sessions anything they have been taught, for example topic work. Green words are still used but now they contain harder graphemes.

Set 3 Sounds Before set 3 sounds are taught children now need to know letter names not just their sounds. Set 3 sounds are sounds which they may already have been taught but they contain different graphemes – ee sound also includes ea, e-e etc. Green words now contain particular graphemes and it is all about knowing which is the correct one. Green or grean, which one is correct? Fred fingers for letter sounds and names ( this is when we trace the letters onto the finger) are used to help with reading and spelling. For example b – r – igh – t.

Finally…… Children in Year 1 have to take a phonic screening test which goes hand in hand with Read Write Inc, so the children are already on their way to a great start. If there are any children who do not pass the phonics screening, they will get another chance to take it again in Year 2. Why not take a look at www.ruthmiskin.com>parents I take this opportunity to say enjoy your Read Write Inc experience. THANK YOU.
