Up Left Right Down 1 4 3 2 BWAXN Most Ss at this level should already be familiar with their basic directions. This lesson is just a refresher for those who know it and an intro to those who may not. Don’t worry if not every S knows this material well, it will be abosrbed relatively quickly. This page matches the worksheet Do not give Ss the worksheet or pencils until AFTER the introduction. Tell Ss to look at the arrows. How many are there? (There are four!) Point at the first arrow and ask, “Where does this go?” (“It goes up!”) Hold your hand up over your head and ask the first Ss, “Where is my hand?” (“Your hand is up!”) Have them ask the Ss next to them and so on around the class. Repeat this with the other directions using a similar style to the above. Once all the words are revealed and have been spoken, give each S the worksheet and a pencil to write down the words. Review each word briefly after they write it before continuing. Down 2

BWAXN BUZZ  BUTT Play a quick game with Ss. Ask all Ss to come up and stand in a circle. When you say “Right” they must put a hand on the right shoulder of the person next to them. Saying left is the opposite. When you say “up” they put their hands up and I’ll let you guess what happens when you say “left”! Did you guess rabid pandas are released into the classroom? No? I did. Maybe I need a vacation… Anyway, play this game as a friendly game the first time around just for practice. Don’t make a scene out of any mistake, just correct it and move on. Later, ask a S to be the leader and step out of the circle. Have the S call out the directions. If any S is wrong you can use a soft dart gun or a soft ball and chuck it at their butt. If this is not appealing, you can tickle them. If you have a one to one student, and you’re not keen on throwing things at their butt or on tickling just one kid, try tossing balls gently at the top of their head or a similarly amusing punishment.

Snakes and Rabbits BWAXN Announce the Ss will be learning a song! Ask what animal they can see. If they say they can see either a rabbit or a snake praise them. If they only say one of the two animals, point out the other. Ask if snakes and rabbits can be friends. If they say yes, offer another hunter/prey relationship (lion+sheet, etc) to demonstrate that sometimes one animal will in fact slaughter another regardless of how cute either animals are. If they say no, ask why? Emphasize that the snake will eat the rabbit!

Sing this song first alone then get Ss to sing along with you. Do actions for each part. “Catch the rabbit” – can be done by clapping your hands together once for each line “Where’d he go?” – Shrug your shoulders three times and look side to side. “Jump up!” – jump with your hands up in the air “Jump down!” – jump into a crouch with your hands down “You’re too slow!” – finger wag with each syllable Go over this song once alone, then twice with Ss (Try to get them singing w/out you on the second try)

Where's the rabbit? In his den! Run left! Run right! And then... BWAXN Sing this song first alone then get Ss to sing along with you. Do actions for each part. “Where’s the rabbit?” – Look from side to side with your hand over your eyes baseball cap visor style “In his den!” – Point three times at a generic location in the distance. You can take a moment to ask if they know the word “den”. Explain that it is the rabbit’s home. Hush you with your hutches and warrens! That doesn’t rhyme! “Run left!” – run in place to the left “Run right!” – run in place to the right “And then…” – loom menacingly with your hands up over a S and make a chomping sound while bringing your hands down upon them in a tickle of death (or similar. Whatever floats the ice cream in your root beer) Go over this song once alone, then twice with Ss (Try to get them singing w/out you on the second try)

And then... Bring both sides together and have Ss all stand up in a circle with you. Go through the entire song WITH ACTIONS. Repeat until either it sticks or they seem a bit fed up with it (remember that it should be fun not monotonous).

BWAXN FREEZE! Play a game with the song. You are a snake and they are rabbits. Tell Ss that THEY must sing the song and do the actions or the snake will eat them! At the end of each verse, they must freeze in place or, again, the snake is gonna chomp their @$$! Feel free to demonstrate this with a capable S beforehand. They will sing the song and reach; “You’re too slow!” then freeze without moving. Walk amongst them and see if you can make any laugh or move then tickle them. If your class is a bit silly and won’t freeze you can change the game so that they must race to their chairs and sit down instead. This usually cures a sillier class as most of them will sit down.

And then... Keep this up through the game so any Ss who need it can read along. Feel free to sing along w/ them the first few times. To make it harder, try removing it after one or two rounds by pressing the “B” key. Pressing the “B” key again will bring it back.
