1 Methodical Counting 01-LCR-02

2 In today’s class, we’ll cover
Numbers and Counting Methods used to count correctly Counting from a number Teacher notes: Hello there! This is the second class in Discrete mathematics and Problem Solving category. For Std 1 students, we are trying to bring in the concept of methodical counting in this class, building upon concepts learnt in the previous class - systematic listing, reasoning and pattern recognition. Here is the original planned content for this class: >>>>> Lesson 2. (Purpose: Methodical counting) > Counting objects: methodically, so that each object gets counted and no object gets counted twice. > By moving the counted objects from one side to another once counted. > Using objects drawn on notebooks (which cannot be moved): by ticking off each counted drawing. > Counting from a number other than 1. > 5 objects kept at a place and 4 more objects to be kept there (counting to start from 6, instead of 1). >>>>> Image Source:

3 Numbers and Counting Let’s play a game. Show me your hand. Any hand.
How many fingers are there in your hand? Show me both your hands. How many fingers in both hands? Begin this slide on numbers and counting by playing a game with students. Let’s first get them focussed on their hands, number of fingers in one hand and total number of fingers in both hands. Once the class has understood that there are 5 fingers in one hand and 10 in two hands, use your hands to ask some more questions. Show children your hand with 2 fingers open and 3 fingers closed. (Hide them behind in your palm). Ask them how many fingers do they see now on your hand? Use both hands and try a few more numbers such as 5, 10, 7. Let the children know that today they have learnt a new skill. (For teachers, it is called subitizing - i.e. instantly seeing and knowing how many instead of counting one by one).

5 ❌ ✅ Counting Right Correct counting = Count every thing only once
No object gets counted more than one time 1 1 2 2 5 In this slide, we bring the students attention on counting correctly. In subsequent slides, students will learn different methods to count correctly such that each object is counted only once and no object is counted more than one time. There are 5 smileys on the left hand side and arrows show how to count correctly. Follow the green arrow path to make sure each object is counted once. On the right hand side, we have shown one of the ways in which students may count incorrectly, if they count the second smiley more than once while traversing each smiley one by one. 5 6 3 4 3 4 CORRECT WRONG

6 Many ways to count correctly
Speaking out aloud while counting Touch and count each object Move and count every item Draw objects in your notebook and count Repeat - Count once again to check

7 Speaking out aloud 1, 2, 3, 4, 5...

8 Touch and count Touch and count youtube video

9 🎒📖🍑📦🍎🌸 🍎 🌸 🍑 📦 🎒 📖 1 2 3 4 5 6 Move and count
Let’s learn how to move objects and count. Look at the objects here We will move them one by one and count... 🍎 🌸 🍑 📦 🎒 📖 1 2 3 4 5 6

10 Draw objects and count ♡♡♡ ♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡
Let’s learn how to draw objects and count. Look at the objects here We will draw them and count as we draw... ♡♡♡ ♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡

11 Repeat: Count again and check
Count objects using any method you know Repeat, count again, one by one. 3 1 4 2 5 REPEAT Count once again and check!

12 Count and Check Take out your pencil box and keep it on your desk
Line up all the objects that you have Count them How many objects do you have? Recount - count them again and check Do you get the same number as the first time? Look at the desk behind you Can you count how many objects your friend has in their pencil box? Is the count same or different?

13 Counting Methods Speaking out aloud while counting
Touch and count each object Move and count every item Draw objects in your notebook and count Repeat - Count once again to check

14 Count things that move Here is a group of many different objects
Can you count only those things that move?

15 Counting from a number Can you count starting from the given number below? 8 10

16 Answers Can you count starting from the given number below? 8 10 5 7 9
4 5 7 8 9 10 6 6

17 Do we always count from 1? 😀😀😀😀😀 😀😀 😀😀
When we begin counting, we always start from 1 Let us say we are given some smiley to count We count them starting at 1 Let us say we counted 5 smiley in all What if the teacher gives us some more smiley to count? To count new objects, we don’t start from 1 We start after the last number we counted There were 5 smileys earlier So, now we start from 6 onwards... Begin counting from 1 😀😀😀😀😀 5 Some more objects... 😀😀 Continue to count after the last number... 😀😀 6 7

18 Activity - Counting Right
Let us count how many students have first name starting with alphabet ‘A’ All students with name that begins with ‘A’, stand up Now let us count them one by one After we count a student, the student can sit down What is the final count? There are students whose name begins with ‘A’

19 Recap What did we learn today? Numbers and Counting
