Creating a Resilient Campus Rob Holland Student Engagement Intern Carbon Neutrality Initiative

What is resiliency? Flexible solutions for multiple futures Practical realizations Involves coping and adapting Alternate ways of prioritizing same issues

Why make a resiliency plan? Impacts are inevitable Build on Climate Action Plan Address most catastrophic situations Assess current vulnerability Sea level rise, erosion, energy Prepare for future vulnerability Food accessibility, water planning

What’s included? Institutional structures to guide the development and implementation of the plan A joint campus-community workforce An initial campus-community resilience assessment including initial indicators and current vulnerability A target date by which defined thresholds of resilience will be met Interim target dates for meeting milestones that will lead to increasing resilience Mechanisms and indicators for tracking progress Actions to make resilience a part of the curriculum and other educational experiences for all students Actions to expand research in resiliency

Plans Included Climate Action Plan Campus Sustainability Plan Water Action Plan Long Range Development Plan Santa Barbara City and County Plans

Resiliency Issues Covered Climate Impacts on Current Ecosystems Sea Level Rise Food Carbon Sequestration Energy

Climate Impacts on Current Ecosystems In current plans Eradication of invasive plants Implementation of drainage and erosion control in areas such as the south parcel of North Campus Restoration of sewer line out of Storke wetland Creation of a landscape management plan In proposed resiliency plan More consideration of native vs. drought resistant Planting for a future climate

Sea Level Rise In current plans In proposed resiliency plan Maps of expected sea level rise TGIF funded student assessment Proposed Comprehensive Sea Level Rise Assessment In proposed resiliency plan Implementation of Comprehensive Sea Level Rise Assessment Identification of most vulnerable areas Movement/Protection of potentially affected sewage pipes, structures, etc.

Sea Level Rise

Food In current plans In proposed resiliency plan Campus farms Local buying 45% of produce grown and distributed within 250 miles of campus In proposed resiliency plan Address changing menus Consider eliminating water intense crops from our diets Research nutrition possibilities of the future

Carbon Sequestration In current plans In proposed resiliency plan Campus Urban Forest Strategically planted trees Energy savings Ability to warm and cool buildings Use of MyTreeKeeper In proposed resiliency plan Mandate that all development must take carbon sequestration into account

Energy In current plans In proposed resiliency plan Increased use of renewable energy In proposed resiliency plan Future of energy planning Disconnecting from the grid? Emergency solar (DC Solar) Storage strategies Right side here is more of a list of possibilities than certainties

Conclusion We should develop a resiliency plan Already have identified many vulnerabilities More well-rounded approach to carbon and climate planning Climate change inevitable Need plans for an unfamiliar world
