The State of Solar at UCSB Rob Holland Student Engagement Intern Carbon Neutrality Initiative UCSB Sustainability

Current Projects Lot 22 SunPower PPA Housing Solar Thermal Units Previous Small Projects Goal: 10% on-site renewable energy by 2020 (Campus Sustainability Plan)

Current & Planned Solar Electricity Produced SunPower PPA: 10% of total electricity produced Plus 100,000 Mwh from previous projects 43% renewable consumption 10% renewable energy on-site 33% from utilities 2020 Goals: 2025 Goal: Scope I and II Carbon Neutral Already there, what’s next?

Opportunities Can reach 20% before storage is an issue – More projects such as solar thermal with Nextility – Expand on-site solar storage – 30% PPA tax rebate extended until 2021 Can be used for storage

Barriers Space Large roofs covered Loss of financial efficiency for smaller roofs Open spaces sensitive and few Deferred maintenance Unfit for panels No wiring Storage No credit or payment for exporting to the grid

Comprehensive Solar Assessment

What it would do: Examine the solar potential of every roof on campus Save time and money on future solar installations. Analyze space and shading. Also utilize existing knowledge about roof health and stability.

What we have: An irradiance map to help us identify possible solar locations Data is from LiDAR borrowed from Solar Census Map can show watts possible, where to put panels, and estimate for different times of the year Data is old (2006), so we have recently applied for a TGIF grant t0 get newer data

Benefits A list of the locations on campus where solar is plausible Reference for future decisions More information = More opportunities for student advocacy/involvement
