Fractured Fairy Tales

What Makes a Story a Fairy Tale? Fractured Fairy Tales What Makes a Story a Fairy Tale? Fairy tales nearly always begin with the words Once upon a time or Long, long ago. They usually have a good character and an evil character. They might involve magic or enchantment. A woodland/forest or castle is usually mentioned. There is always a problem, that is eventually solved and the good characters live happily ever after.

Fractured Fairy Tales Over the past few weeks we have read a number of fairy tales. Can you guess the titles of the tales illustrated here? 3. 4. 5. 1. 2.

Fractured Fairy Tales Today we are going to: Learn what a fractured fairy tale is. Explore ideas to turn a traditional fairy tale into a fractured one.

Fractured Fairy Tales Think about one of the tales you have read lately. Now think how that might change. For example, what would the witch tell her friends about her encounter with Hansel and Gretel? It would not be the same version as the one told by the Children.

Fractured Fairy Tales One way to fracture a fairy tale is to do a “resistant reading”. This means you take the one or more of the genre conventions and change it to its opposite. See examples below: Prince saves princess…change to…princess saves prince Good always wins…change to…evil wins Wicked stepmother…change to…overly kind stepmother Cute animals help princess….change to…cute animals are evil

Fractured Fairy Tales Listen to the audio:

Fractured Fairy Tales Working in groups of 3-4 you are going to fracture a fairy tale. You will need to consider the following points: Changing the setting. Changing the personalities of your characters. Writing the tale from the another character’s view point. Changing the problem. Changing the solution. Adding a little humour. Writing a different ending.
