Pre-service PGCE (M) Induction Friday 21st September 2012

Themes Microteaching Reflection Action Planning During the course of today, the following matters will be explored: Microteaching Reflection Action Planning The Learning Autobiography You will also be given opportunities to evaluate the Induction process and engage in further, independent study.

The microteaching experience You are required to do a microteaching of 15 minutes as part of the module assessment for 6PC012. It is an expectation of a PtLLS course. For some of you it will be the first time you have taught.

When? 18th October all day 25th October all day or 25th October all day In the first instance, please be prepared to do the microteaching session on the 18th October. We will pick names out of a hat nearer the time.

Who to? You will deliver to a group of peers and your Constructing Self and Identity tutor. You can be videoed and should let your Self and Identity tutor know nearer the time.

What will it be on? It is your choice. It does need to be on an aspect of your subject specialism.

What will you need? A completed University lesson planner We will provide you with the University lesson planner on the module. You will also be able to access an interactive planner. We will deliver materials on lesson planning and signpost other materials to you.

Accompanying resources We will talk about resources on the module. You might create or adapt resources. It is likely that you will be in groups of about 20 so you might want to think about how to share/use/distribute resources.

We don’t have these any more!

How will it be assessed? Your Constructing Self and Identity tutor will give you feedback. Your peers will also give you feedback. You will be asked to evaluate your microteaching. It will inform the report and the assessment criteria will be in the module guide.

Any Questions?

Hints and tips Be well prepared Be/seem confident Have eye contact with your peers Keep things simple Can you think of any more? We will cover these in more detail in the module

Reflection and the Learning Autobiography Reflection and your development as a reflective practitioner will form an important component of the programme: Introductory Task for the Learning Autobiography. Bring a hard copy to Thursday’s morning session and have an electronic copy available, which you will upload to your webfolio in due course. What’s reflective about this task? ‘Further education teachers’ accounts of their professional identities’. Please ensure that you read this and are prepared to discuss it in next Thursday’s afternoon session. Jephcote and Salisbury (2009)

Reflection Reflection can be associated with the concept of time. PAST – retrospective reflection – learning from experience. PRESENT – contemporaneous reflection – learning through experience. FUTURE – prospective reflection – learning for the future.

Abstract Conceptualisation Kolb’s Four Stage Model of Learning Concrete Experience Active Experimentation Reflective observation Abstract Conceptualisation

LLUK Standards Teachers in the lifelong learning sector reflect on and demonstrate commitment to improvement of own personal and teaching skills through regular evaluation and use of feedback. (LLUK, 2007, p.4) Teachers in the lifelong learning sector know and understand ways to reflect, evaluate and use research to develop own practice, and to share good practice with others. (LLUK, 2007, p.4)

Reflection and Action Planning Does reflection have natural links to action planning? What is action planning? What might you expect to see in an action plan? What are your (current) strengths and priorities for development? 17
