CHAPTER 3 PROPERTIES AND CHANGES OF MATTER SEC 1 PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

What you’ll learn? IDENTIFY PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES CLASSIFY OBJECTS BASED ON PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

Why it’s important? Understanding the different properties of matter will help you to better describe the world around you.

New Vocabulary: Physical Property Chemical Property

All substances have properties… Including people Example: People can be identified by their …

What are properties? Matter has observable and measurable qualities. We can use general properties to identify substances. Two basic types of properties of matter: Physical properties and Chemical properties…

Physical Properties Physical properties are used to identify, describe and classify matter. Characteristic of a substance that can be observed (using your senses) without changing the substance into something else.

More EXAMPLES - Physical size, shape, freezing point, boiling point, melting point, magnetism, viscosity, density, solubility, luster and many more. Density- amount of mass in a volume Solubility- number of grams of one substance that will dissolve in 100g of another substance at a given temp.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Dependent on size Mass, weight, volume Independent of size Density, melting, boiling, solubility, magnetic, state and color

Chemical Properties A characteristic that cannot be observed without altering/changing the substance.
