Crystallization

What is the purpose of crystallization (pointing out voting issues) in a round?

You can give voting issues At the beginning of your final speech At the end of your final speech Explain specific issues and tell the judge to vote your way

What were the voting issues in the debate you flowed?

Good crystallization… Based in understanding and/or winning the value/value criterion clash in a round so that they are framing their arguments using the same evaluative mechanism the judge will use to evaluate the round

Good Crystallization… Selecting the most powerful issues that matter with respect to the evaluative mechanism

Good Crystallization… Focuses on relevant issues

Standards Choose your crystallization based on the standards If the debate is “ends based,” meaning having to do with the outcome of actions such as protection of life, only those arguments that prove your side is protecting life and your opponent’s side leads to the destruction of or indifference of life should matter in the round

Standards If the standards are “means based,” such as ensuring meaningful checks on gov’t action,” only arguments that show your side places more checks on the gov’t should be important

Standards You need to find strong links to the argument and irrelevant arguments your opponent made Point out your opponent’s irrelevant arguments

Standards Voting issues should be larger issues in the round and not small isolated arguments

Crystallization Structure Voting issues should be told to the judge by informing the judge they are presenting voting issues You should point out why you are winning You should point out why your opponent is not winning Cite places on the flow where you are beating your opponent’s case Lastly, you should explain why this issue links to the criterion

TEMPLATE FOR VOTING ISSUES SPEECH IN FINAL SPEECH My first voting issue is ___________________________. I am (name of issue) winning this argument through the extension of my _____________________________________ (name contention and sub point) My opponent makes this issue worse as I stated when I responded to their first contention by saying _______________________________________ (summarize the argument) Although my opponent may believe they are winning the ______________________________ (name contention) By saying ____________________________________________ (summarize argument) Although my opponent believes they are winning that contention, my argument outweighs because ______________________________________________ (compare arguments). This is sufficient to meat the criterion of _________________________________________________ (insert criterion) because of the following reason_________________________________________________________________

Activities 1. Fix the undeveloped voting issues from the flow from your flowed round. What are the issues? How can they be fixed? 2. Write 2-3 voting issues for your case. Write concisely and clearly why their position is worthy of the ballot. They should be 30-45 seconds long
