2 OBJECTIVE Establish the “Bare Bones” of argumentative writing through presentation. Utilize resources and templates for argumentative writing Demonstrate a sample writing lesson through modeling and practice.

4 WHAT IS IT? The argumentative essay is a genre of writing that requires the student to investigate a topic; collect, generate, and evaluate evidence; and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner. Purdue University

Appealing to emotion and reason. ARGUMENTATIVE PERSUASIVE

6 A&P Position (Claim aka Thesis): Take ONE side and defend with reasons. 2-3 Body Paragraphs: Expand on the reasons in the Claim Counterargument: Challenges the other side with its own arguments Conclusion: Summarizes the essay or expands on its real-world impact.

9 A.C.E ANSWER: Pick a side. Defend with reasons
CITE (COPY): Argue with THEIR words EXPAND (EXPLAIN): Back up THEIR words with YOUR words.

10 QUESTIONING FRAME Frame in four steps (ACT) 1. State the Issue

1. Introduction Mimic the Questioning Frame (Issue, Support, Oppose, YOU) Claim = Position + Reasons Take ONE Position Only

12 THE ARGUMENTATIVE OUTLINE
2. Body (Paragraphs) Use the A.C.E. Strategy State a Reason (Answer) for your position. Cite an example from the text. Expand upon how citation defends answer.

3. Counterargument State what opposition says (Answer) Cite quotes or examples to show why they are wrong Expand on your examples
