To promote a safe and inclusive environment where everyone is welcome! G B T Q 2 + esbian ay isexual ransgender ueer spirited “72% of Allies are more likely to accept a job at a company that supports LGBT rights.” “Staying closeted at work is like speaking in a fake British accent all day; exhausting, distracting, and demoralizing. You're lying while trying to build trust.” “As a gay male, I was nervous about my future at ICBC.” “How would I talk about my trans partner at ICBC?” “Individuals working in open, diverse, inclusive environments have higher levels of engagement and satisfaction, leading to greater productivity.” Reference: Badgett, M. V. L., Durso, L. E., Kastanis, A. N. G. E. L. I. K. I., & Mallory, C. H. R. I. S. T. Y. (2013). The business impact of LGBT-supportive workplace policies (pp. 1–37). Los Angeles, CA: Williams Institute, UCLA School of Law. What does LGBTQ2+ mean? In short, it means “gender and sexual minorities”, or those who are not heterosexual. Specifically, L stands for lesbian, G stands for Gay, B stands for bisexual, T is for both transgender and transsexual, Q is for both queer and questioning, 2 is two-spirit (aboriginal), + stands for the rest who does not identify as heterosexual, including intersex, asexual, pansexual, etc. As a matter of fact, there is no consensus regarding what term is the best to represent the entire LGBT community. However, LGBTQ2+ seems the most inclusive one. Notes (more for the questions, if they ask) Heterosexual in this context refers to the hegemonic masculinity or femininity that are considered as the social norm. Transsexual refers to those who transit from one sex to another, mostly through the use of hormones and/or surgical procedures. Transgender is a term for those whose identity, expression, behavior, or general sense of self does not conform to what is usually associated with the sex they were born in the place they were born. Business Impact of LGBT Supportive Workplace Policies A research at William Institute at UCLA School of Law suggests that LGBT supportive workplace polices has significant positive business impact. Quote from the paper: “More specifically, the existing set of studies demonstrates that LGBT-supportive policies and workplace climates are linked to greater job commitment, improved workplace relationships, increased job satisfaction, and improved health outcomes among LGBT employees. Furthermore, LGBT-supportive policies and workplace climates are also linked to less discrimination against LGBT employees and more openness about being LGBT. Less discrimination and more openness, in turn, are also linked to greater job commitment, improved workplace relationships, increased job satisfaction, improved health outcomes, and increased productivity among LGBT employees “
