Outline Repetition: The HESR Repetition: Luminosity Status and time schedule of HESR 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn

HESR for PANDA Circumference 574 m Momentum (energy) range Stochastic cooling Circumference 574 m Momentum (energy) range 1.5 to 15 GeV/c (0.8-14.1 GeV) Injection of (anti-)protons from CR / RESR at 3.8 GeV/c Maximum dipole field: 1.7 T Dipole field at injection: 0.4 T Dipole field ramp: 0.025 T/s Acceleration rate 0.2 (GeV/c)/s long. Kicker vert. PU hor. Electron cooler PANDA p_bar injection 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn

p-bar production chain in the MSV of FAIR

(Modularised Start Version) pbar target/ separator Antiproton Chain (Modularised Start Version) acceleration in p-linac to 70 MeV multiturn injection into SIS18, acceleration to 4 GeV transfer of 4 SIS pulses to SIS100 acceleration to 29 GeV and extraction of single bunch antiproton target and separator for 3 GeV antiprotons collection and 10 s pre-cooling of 108 p-bars in the Collector Ring CR Every 10 s transfer of 108 p-bars at 3 GeV to HESR accumulation and storage of antiprotons in the HESR SIS18 SIS100 p-linac UNILAC HESR pbar target/ separator CR Dieter Prasuhn 18.03.2015

The accumulation process in HESR 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn

Remarks about Luminosity

1010 p-bars The intensity in the HESR is now limited to due to the cooling and injection efficiency. This means for PANDA: Less intensity (only high resolution mode) Worse duty cycle due to 20 minutes accumulation time 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn

target thickness = 4*1015 cm-2  1/e-beam lifetime is 2200 s p = 1.5 GeV/c target thickness = 4*1015 cm-2  1/e-beam lifetime is 2200 s 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn

target thickness = 4*1015 cm-2  1/e-beam lifetime is 7500 s p = 15 GeV/c target thickness = 4*1015 cm-2  1/e-beam lifetime is 7500 s 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn

Some remarks for the commissioning We do not expect full intensity of p_bars (108 per CR-bunch) in the beginning But less than 107 are invisable for the diagnostics! 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn

Status and time line of HESR

HESR Prototyping and Tests with COSY Pellet Target WASA Residual Gas Profile Monitor Barrier Bucket Cavity Stochastic Cooling 2 MeV e-Cooler 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn 14

First components tested in COSY HESR Barrier bucket cavity in use in COSY Stochastic cooling prototype pickup structures tested in COSY First cooling with these structures was performed at the Nuclotron in Dubna 2 MeV electron cooler is installed and commissioned in COSY Beam profile monitor installed in COSY 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn

Magnets (Tendering by FAIR) 1st of its kind ready is measured. Series production is released. 2nd dipole is fabricated, will be delivered to Jülich in April After that we expect 1 dipole being delivered to Jülich every 2 weeks Delivery of last dipole (46) expected for Q2/2017 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn

Delivery of last quadrupole (84) expected Q2/2016 Quadrupoles: 1st of ist kind is ready and also recently measured Series production is released Delivery of last quadrupole (84) expected Q2/2016 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn

Power Converters Quadrupole power converters: 1st of its kind in house and accepted next 15 PoCos passed the FAT The last Quad-PoCo is expected to be delivered end of Q2/2015 Dipole test power converter: Is delivered and used by the dipole manufacturer for the measurement of the dipoles The 2 HESR dipole PoCos: are specified, but will be ordered matched to the CC schedule 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn

RF and stochastic cooling First amplifiers have arrived and been tested in Jülich Tanks for stochastic cooling are under construction, 1st Pickup tank is expected to be ready Q2/2015, will be installed in COSY for tests 1st kicker tank is expected to be ready Q4/2015 and installed in COSY 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn

Vacuum Stainless steel is in house Vacuum pipes for the dipoles are fabricated First dipole chamber has been delivered to the dipole manufacturer and was mounted into the dipole 1st dipole vacuum chamber is NEG-coated by GSI and is now going to be vacuum tested in Jülich The detailled Specs for the slow control will be finished Q2/2015. 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn

Injection Injection kicker and supply: Design of the manufacturer is accepted, Kicker tank is under construction Test expected Q2/2015 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn

Experiment integration 26 mrad deflection PANDA chicane dipoles and power converters are ordered PoCos ready for FAT PANDA dipole (40 mrad deflection) Chicane dipoles PANDA solenoid Compensation solenoid 14 mrad deflection 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn

Further In-Kind contributions: Romania: Sextupoles and steerers: Prototypes of each kind are measured Time schedule for delivery to Jülich is consolidated Power Converters: Prototype is accepted, series production can start 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn

HESR overall time schedule All detailed specs are ready and part of the In-Kind contract We assume the building to be “ready to move in” January 2017 Then installation in the tunnel in 2017, commissioning without beam beginning of 2018, commissioning with beam 2nd half of 2018, ready for start of experiments in 2019 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn

Possible Future Perspectives by the „Senior Leadership team“: Franzke, Angert, Maier (the FAMe-team)

A new idea under discussion for early commissioning of HESR: a direct connection SIS18 - HESR 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn

and also p-bars to ESR / Cry-Ring 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn

Summary The HESR time line is still un-effected by the Civil Construction timeline We will need storage place for the HESR components We do not change our efforts, independant of the circulating rumors and discussions. 18.03.2015 Dieter Prasuhn
