PANDA Target Pipe Meeting Alfons Khoukaz Institut für Kernphysik, WWU Münster, Germany PANDA Target Pipe Meeting February 2013

Status of the PANDA Cluster Target PANDA Prototype target in Münster routinely in operation Achieved target thickness: 2x10 15 atoms/cm 2 Final PANDA Cluster-Jet Target is currently build up in Münster Vacuum pumping system for the cluster target completely build up and in operation

Right: Vacuum pump system for the PANDA Cluster Target Left: Cluster generator for PANDA (central part of the Cluster Target)

Integration of New Pumping System

Cluster Target Beam Diagnostics & Beam Target Vertex Studies

New MCP Cluster Beam Monitor Direct observation of an ionized cluster beam by: MCP+phosphor screen+CCD camera

New MCP Cluster Beam Monitor

MCP system is routinely used for cluster beam diagnostics Investigation of cluster beam shapes Use of different collimators shapes/sizes Gas background tests Investigation of the 2-dim. cluster beam density distributions possible

Different Cluster Beam Shapes

Cluster Beam Density Distribution Intensity analysis allows for density distribution studies Useful to identify bad skimmer/collimator adjustement (see below)

Beam-Target Interaction Idea: The later HESR antiproton beam will also ionize the cluster beam Similarly to the electron ionization the cluster ions should be visible in the MCP setup The observed image should be an image of the beam-target interaction vertex at PANDA! Test mesurement at ANKE/COSY last week

MCP Test at ANKE (COSY)

MCP Test at ANKE COSY beam injection: (300 MeV/c)COSY beam accelereation COSY beam

COSY Beam at 2.095 GeV/c COSY beam steerer offCOSY beam steerer on

COSY Beam at 2.095 GeV/c The beam-target interaction can be seen directly New possibility for beam/target adjustment for Vertex size measurement... Average of several pictures

Details about the Target Integration

Cluster-Jet Target + Vacuum Pumps Installed at PANDA

Cluster-Jet Target Removed; Vacuum Pumps Still in Place

(De-)Installation of the Cluster Target-Jet Target The main cluster-jet target device will be fixed inside an Al-frame, which can be removed in one step A vacuum valve will be the separation point between target source (and dump) and beam/target pipe The deinstallation of the target will be done in different steps:

Cluster-jet jarget installed

Step 1: Prepare special target vacuum connector for opening

Step 2: Vacuum connector open

Step 3: Open screws of Al frame and lift target frame up

Step 4: Cluster-jet target removed; differential vacuum stage of cluster target still in

Step 5: Vacuum stage of cluster target removed

Task of Jülich/Accelerator group: Design, mounting, adjustement, lifting of remaining parts

Beam dump stage ready, but details on mounting etc. missing

To be discussed: Design, valves, pellet tracking mounting…

Space requirements for the Pellet Tracking System Design of a pellet tracking system for PANDA under development at Uppsala Details about mounting etc. will be fixed as soon as the R&D is finished Space requirements of the tracking system must be considered for the beam/target pipe planning
