Presentation transcript:

Human Bodies – Data Handling Expected Outcomes: Children to work collaboratively (in pairs) To input data into an Excel Spreadsheet and use formatting tools To interrogate a spreadsheet using advanced formulae Present findings using graphical representation.

Step 1 – So what do you know? Assess prior knowledge about Human bodies. Children to write down as much as they can remember what they have learnt about the Human Body in 3 minutes. Feedback verbal responses to teacher.

Step 2: Open Excel and Create a Table with the following Heading. Working in pairs or three’s children to open Excel and create a spreadsheet. Teacher to discuss the spreadsheet elements i.e. CELL, TABLE, COLUMN, ROW. Children to copy the table below and Save the table. Body Measurements of Year 4 in cms Height boys Height girls Legs Boys Legs Girls Arms Boys Arms Girls Waist Boys Waist Girls

Step 3: You are Tailors and will be measuring each other We are going to measure the heights, legs (from the hip bone), arms (from the shoulder bone) and the waist, of both boys and girls in pairs. Everyone to measure a partner and put their figures in the spreadsheet. Teacher to input data from the children into the Excel spreadsheet on the board - as children shout out their figures all the class are to type in the measurements. Measurement of Height of class Y4 cms Boys Height Girls Height 120 122 130 118 112 143 152 154

Step 4: Children to Format Their Spreadsheet Have children correct any errors and enlarge columns to include all text. They can add colour to text and cells. Embolden or enlarge text etc. Children to calculate the Average for each column. Teacher to demonstrate. Click in the cell you want the average to appear and go to the Sum icon in the toolbar and select Average from the dropdown menu. Press Enter and the figures will automatically appear.

Step 4: Present Findings using Appropriate Graphs Children to select data from both height columns of boys and girls and create a graph ensuring to add a title calling it: Heights of Boys and Girls in Year 4 Print the charts. Children to explore creating other appropriate graphs/charts.

Step 5: Answer the following question: For every metre in length, the tailor needs to order a metre of cloth to make the school uniform for a child. There are 230 Year 4 pupils (120 girls and 110 boys) who will need unfirms made for the new school year. Based on the information you have put into your spreadsheet and calculated, how much cloth does the tailor need to order to make the 230 uniforms? TIP: You will need to use formulae to calculate how much material is needed and make sure it is not in cms but metres. You have 10 mins.

=SUM(A1,C1,E1,G1)*110/100
