Energy The ability to do work All biological processes require energy Energy is gained by the food an organism eats

Energy Use A cell can not use all available energy at once Some is stored as ATP (adenosine triphosphate)

ADP and ATP Cells make ATP by adding a phosphate group to ADP (Adenosine diphosphate) When the phosphate to phosphate bonds are created energy is stored When a phosphate group breaks off ATP becomes ADP and energy is released The ADP then again bond with another phosphate group to store more energy as ATP Energy is stored in phosphate to phosphate bonds

What do you think What would happen if ADP lost a phosphate group? It would give off energy become AMP awaiting either gaining a phosphate group or losing it last remaining one

Types of Energy Available energy (energy that can be used right away) is called free energy Energy that is stored is potential energy
