1 Energy

2 What is Energy? DEF: ability to do work or cause change

3 Adenosine TRIphosphate
How Do We Make Energy? Energy, from food, is converted into a compound called ATP: Adenosine TRIphosphate This conversion occurs in the cells of your body

4 ATP

5 ATP = Fully Charged Battery
ATP = ENERGY CARRIER Energy needs vary so it is stored in ATP ATP gives us full energy when we need it ATP = Fully Charged Battery Like a battery provides 100% energy to a flashlight, ATP provides 100% energy to our bodies!!!! + -

6 ADP = Partially Charged Battery
When one compound of ATP releases energy, ATP is changed into ADP: Adenosine DIphosphate What does the DI mean? ______ Where is the energy going? Energy is released when the bond between the 2nd and 3rd phosphate of ATP is broken. 2 ADP = Partially Charged Battery

7 ADP = Partially Charged Battery
ADP: missing 1 phosphate element Happens as a result of energy usage Like a battery that needs to be recharged when at 50% ADP provides only 50% of energy -

8 It needs to be RECHARGED!!!
When you eat again, energy is provided to add P element to form ATP Happens as a results of consuming energy

9 It’s a CIRCLE!!!! Like a re-chargable battery can be re-charged
ADP can be re-charged to ATP ATP remains in this form until energy is needed again When energy is needed again, ATP is converted into ADP The circle never ends!!!!!

10 Energy Released Energy Consumed ATP ADP
Like a 50% battery is re-charged to 100% ADP is re-charged ATP when energy is used When energy is consumed, ADP converted ATP

11 Additional Questions When do we release energy?
When do we consume energy?
