How does a single cell become a person made of many cells? There are many different kinds of cells. Each cell has its own function or job.

Types of Cells Even though cells perform different jobs or functions in the body, they all have the same structure. Muscle Cells Nerve Cells Red Blood Cells

Remember these are just a few examples!! Cells Continued…. Bone Cells: ________________________ Muscle Cells: form muscles Nerve Cells: _______________________ Red Blood Cells: carry oxygen White Blood Cells: __________________ Remember these are just a few examples!!

__________________________________________ The Skeletal System __________________________________________ skeletal system The framework of bones and other tissues that supports the body The 206 bones in your body make blood cells and store calcium and other minerals.

The Skeletal System Some joints allow bones to move, while others never move but protect organs instead. Joints: ___________________________________

__________________________________________ The Skeletal System __________________________________________ tendons A type of connecting tissue that joins muscles to bones and muscles to muscles Connecting tissue allows bones and muscles to work together as they move. Your achilles tendon attaches your calf muscle to your heel bone. Ligaments make it possible for your knees and ankles to work. The tip of your nose contains cartilage. Cartilage also pads your knee joints. ligaments A type of connecting tissue that holds bones to other bones at the joint cartilage A strong, flexible tissue that allows joints to move easily, cushions bones, and supports soft tissues

Ligaments and Tendons Ankle Knee

_________________________________________ The Muscular System _________________________________________ muscular system Tissues that move parts of the body and control the organs Skeletal muscles are voluntary. They work in pairs to move bones. As one muscle contracts, the other lengthens. Smooth and cardiac muscles are involuntary. Smooth muscles are found in your body’s organs and blood vessels. The heart has its own special type of involuntary muscle called the cardiac muscle. The muscular system provides the power and flexibility you need to move.

Caring for Your Bones and Muscles Tips for Caring for Your Bones and Muscles Do flexibility exercises. ________________________________________________________________ Choose physical activities that build cardiovascular strength. Good posture is not stiff posture. Sit and stand in a correct but relaxed way. Your lower back should be slightly curved. If you use a backpack, try not to overload it. When you lift heavy objects, make your legs do most of the work. See a doctor if you get hurt. Foods high in protein can help build muscle. Foods high in Vitamin D, calcium, and other minerals help your bones grow and become stronger. ____________________________________ When you lift heavy objects, keep your back straight and bend your knees. _________________________________________________________________
