Printmaking Definition: a two-dimensional artform that allows the production of multiple original artworks. Here are the four types: Relief Printmaking Intaglio Printmaking Screen Printmaking Lithography Which type do you think we are doing? Why would you want to make copies of an original?

Printmaking Relief printmaking: the artist cuts away parts of the surface of a plate. The part that is not cut away will stand out in relief.

Printmaking Relief printmaking: Ink is rolled over the surface of the plate with a brayer Ink can be forced onto the paper by gently rubbing with both hands or using a burnishing tool.

Printmaking Relief printmaking: Ink is applied to the plate and the relief parts of the plate produce the image. Remember, words need to be carved backwards and mirror image so they come out right!

Our Project Using a small piece of linoleum, carve out a design that represents you. We will call this your “logo.” It could be as simple as your initials or complex as you want it to be. Start by drawing the design in pencil as a thumbnail sketch Once it has been approved, draw the design on your linoleum. Carve away everything around the drawing Ink your design with a brayer Press the linoleum onto the paper Peel away and you’ve made a copy!
