How Fires Start Fire is a chemical reaction involving three components: fuel, oxygen and heat. When all three are present rapid oxidation or burning occurs. Take away any one of the three components of the fire triangle and the fire will be extinguished. FUEL - Fuel can be any combustible/flammable material like wood, paper,gasoline,etc.. In any form - solid, liquid or gas. OXYGEN - There must be enough oxygen to sustain conbustion. At least 16% percent oxygen is needed. HEAT - Heat is the energy necessary to increase the temperature of the fuel in order to allow ignition to

Fire Safety Tips Know the Location of all fire extinguishers in your work areas. Use fire extinguishers only on small, confined fires with little smoke. Know the locations of all exits in your work areas. Count the number of doors to the nearest exit. If caught in a fire drop to your hands and knees, hold your breathe as much as possible and breathe shallowly through your nose using your blouse or shirt.

Fire Safety Tips (cont) If the fire is large or is near other fire sources, immediately call 9-1-1 and leave the premises. If clothing catches fire, STOP, DROP and ROLL. Learn the PASS method for fire extinguisher use.

Remember P-A-S-S P-A-S-S method. Fire extinguishers can vary in type and size but all operate in basically the same way. If the fire is small, confined to a single area, there is no heavy smoke and there is an exit available to you for evacuation purposes, grab the nearest extinguisher and use the P-A-S-S method. PULL the pin located in the extinguisher’s handle AIM the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire SQUEEZE the handle SWEEP from side to side at the base of the fire until it is extinguished Tip: Add your own speaker notes here.
