The Signs of the Sacrament CCC 1288 “ From that time on the apostles, in fulfillment of Christ’s will, imparted to the newly baptized by the laying on of hands the gift of the Spirit that completes the grace of Baptism…The imposition of hands is rightly recognized by the Catholic tradition as the origin of the sacrament of Confirmation, which in a certain way perpetuates the grace of Pentecost in the Church.”

Students will learn about the procedures of the Rite of Confirmation. Daily Objective: Students will learn about the procedures of the Rite of Confirmation.

I Can Statement: I can name the three procedures which occur during the Rite of Confirmation.

The Laying on of Hands

The Anointing with Chrism “The Sacrament of Confirmation is conferred through the anointing with chrism on the forehead, which is done by the laying on of the hand, and thorough the words: ‘Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.’” CCC 1300

Anointing with Chrism Meaning and symbolism in Biblical times: Sign of joy, abundance and strength Cleanses and heals Sign of Consecration

The Sign of Peace The sign of peace concludes the rite of the sacrament and signifies the communion we have as a Church with the bishop and with all the faithful. CCC 1301

The Effects of Confirmation “The effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost.” CCC 1302 “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes to you and you shall be my witnesses to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

The Seal of the Holy Spirit When you are anointed in the sacrament you will receive the seal of the Holy Spirit on your soul. It marks you as totally belonging to Christ, confirms your enrollment in his service forever, and also is a promise of his divine protection. “But it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has commissioned us; he has put his seal upon us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.” You belong to Jesus Christ! 2 Corinthians 1:21-22

The Grace of Confirmation: + Increases and deepens the grace we received at baptism + Unites us more firmly to Christ +Increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us + Increases our bond with the entire Church + Gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross

God our Father made us his children by water and the Holy Spirit: may he bless us and watch over us with his fatherly love. Jesus Christ the Son of God promised that the Spirit of truth would be with his Church for ever: may he bless us and give us courage in professing the true faith. The Holy Spirit came down upon the disciples and set their hearts on fire with love: may he bless us, keep us in faith and love and bring us to the joy of God’s kingdom. AMEN
