All about the imperfect tense and how to form it

You use the imperfect tense to describe what you have been doing in the past for a long period of time. E.g.: I used to eat baguettes I used to visit France every summer This is the used to' tense, and it is when you have done something you dont do anymore. (Not a one off action)

We use the imperfect tense to describe how the weather was in the past.. i.e. Il faisait chaud It was hot Il pleuvait It was raining Il neigeait It was snowing Hier, il faisait froid!

You use the Imperfect tense when you use ing in the past. I.e. I was singing I was drinking I was arriving Goes to… Je chantais Je buvais Jarrivais Je mangeais au Macdo quand mon amie est arrivée.

je ais tu ais il ait nous ions vous iez ils aient You choose your subject and you use the nous form of the verb. Then add the endings as shown

i.e. Take the NOUS form of the PRESENT TENSE, and take off the –ONS to get the Imperfect stem. MangeonsJe ais I used to eat ParlonsIl ait He used to talk FinissonsNous ions We used to finish
