Our Volunteers Have diverse backgrounds, expertise, skill sets All bring something different to the table Contribute a range of hours per/week (and month) Fill a variety of roles and responsibilities

Where Do We Find Volunteers?

Discussion In your experience… Where have you found volunteers? How did you get them involved?

Finding Volunteers First stop: Your personal network

Finding Volunteers People who care about health care (consumers, providers, school clubs, etc.) Small business owners Members of community organizations Churches Public service providers (e.g. school, libraries, food banks) Community action organizations Be ready with your “elevator pitch” – strike up a conversation wherever you are

Meeting Those Volunteers Plus 1s Have each person you know reach out to 5 others Ask your current volunteers to bring a friend Create an opportunity to meet people Host a house meeting or informational session – get them bought in and excited! Identify existing opportunities Go to events happening in your community Make a 30 second pitch Mix & mingle Always have a sign-up sheet and/or exchange business cards

Recruit and Activate Have opportunities to get involved Always have a few upcoming events to invite someone to Get their buy-in Share the vision and some long-term strategy – get them excited! Have a variety of ways a person can get involved Make sure there are lots of different ways people can contribute. The most important thing you can do… ASK THEM! Make a “hard” ask Soft Ask: Do you think you might be able to volunteer some time? Hard Ask: Can I count on you to join me at Thursday’s phonebank, 8PM at the office?

Managing Volunteers

Discussion In your experience… What are your 5 tenets in managing volunteers?
