Welcome to Morris Brandon Rising Kindergarten Parent Information Session Dual Language Immersion January 24, 2017

Today’s Agenda 4 Rotations Based on your # Follow rotation schedule on your agenda A Day in the Life of DLI at Brandon (gym) Why DLI? (the research behind the program) (Media Center) Parent Panel (hear from current parents about their experience) (Music Room) Classroom Observation (see DLI in action!) (meet outside Media Center)

A Day in the Life of DLI

What Does DLI Look Like? Program Attributes Program Research 50% of core academic instruction occurs in the target language (Spanish) Academic content is not translated in the English classroom; the Spanish classroom is not the same content as the English classroom translated. Rather it is new, related content. Language learning and content learning are integrated. Students learn new content while learning a new language. The Spanish classroom is a 100% immersion environment; no English is spoken except by students as they learn the target language it will take 1-3 years for students to acquire conversational language it will take 5-7 years for academic language development it takes a least 600 hours to acquire some language proficiency (this equates to the end of 1st/beginning of 2nd grade for us)

A Kindergarten School Day 4 hours of core content instruction ELA/Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies 1 hour for recess and lunch 90 minutes for Specials Art, Music, PE, Technology, Guidance, Media Center, Science Lab, Parent Volunteer, Extra Recess

DLI vs. Traditional 2 teachers: switch from English to Spanish or vice versa after 2 hours of core content instruction 5 core content areas: Math English Language Arts/Reading Spanish Language Arts/Reading Science Social Studies 1 Homeroom teacher for the entire day who teaches all core content in English only 4 core content areas: Math English Language Arts/Reading Science Social Studies

Example DLI Student Schedule Time Class Subject(s) 8-9:50 English Classroom ELA/Reading, SS or Sci, Math reinforcement 9:55-10:50 Spanish Classroom Math, SS or Sci 10:55-11:25 Lunch Lunch with all of K 11:25-11:55 Recess Recess with all of K 12-12:40 Special 1 of: Art, Music, PE, Technology, Science Lab, Parent Volunteer, Extra Recess 12:45-1:30 1:35-2:20 Spanish ELA, SS or Sci

A/B Weeks Classes follow one schedule for an entire week They alternate schedules each week to not always have Spanish Literacy in the PM, for example. A color is on the door to remind them which HR to start in (each HR assigned a color at beginning of the year…will align with Hive next year)

Integration with non-DLI classes Lunch Recess Field Trips Performances Hives Teacher Planning/Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment

Monitoring Student Learning STAR assessments Math assessments Spanish literacy assessments DLI vs non-DLI quarterly comparisons

DLI after Kindergarten Cohort model Add 2 spots in 1st grade (priority given to Spanish speakers) Similar daily schedule to K In 2nd-5th grade, will gain 2 hours and 15 minutes weekly to the core instructional day No other language (ex. French)

Registration and Application Process Follow regular registration process and procedures Registration packets mid-March Application is one page in the packet Turn in with a completed registration packet Due June 1st (it is NOT first come, first served) Lottery week of June 5th (specific date will be included on application) Fill 23 of the 25 seats in each HR; save 2 seats for native Spanish speakers If not full by end of July, fill with waiting list before Day One
