General Characteristics Contains the Great Plains, the Rockies, and Coastal Ranges. Their northern border is at 60º N. Railroads and the Trans-Canada Highway connect east and west. General Characteristics

The Western Provinces Manitoba Has over 100,000 lakes. Lake Winnipeg is the largest lake in southern Canada. The Western Provinces

Winnipeg is Canada’s gateway to the west.

Saskatchewan Southern region covered by plains. Leads Canada in wheat production.

Has the world’s largest sand dunes area north of 58º N at Lake Athabaska.

Alberta Known for oil and natural gas. Calgary, Canada’s fifth largest city, is the Gateway to the Rockies.

British Columbia Known for forestry and mining. 75% of the province is covered by mountains.

Vancouver has the third largest metropolitan area in Canada.
