Growing toward maturity A study of the epistle of James. Pride & Prejudice. Growing toward maturity A study of the epistle of James.

Who we really ARE IS REVEALED BY WHAT WE DO. Spiritual Life Principle:

The Deity of Christ, vv. 1—4. Jesus did not show partiality, Matt. 22:16. God does not show partiality, Deut. 10:17. The Apostles speak against partiality, Acts 10:34; Rom. 2:11; Eph. 6:9; Col. 3:25; 1 Peter 1:17. Social discrimination is incompatible with our faith.

The grace of God, vv. 5—7. The emphasis is on God’s choosing, v. 5. God ignores national differences, Acts 10:34 the acceptance of the Gentiles. God ignores social differences, Ephesians 6:9, Master or slave, rich or poor.

The word of God, vv. 8—11. The Royal Law, Leviticus 19:18, “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” It rules all other laws. Obeying it makes you a king. Christian love means treating others as God has treated me.

The judgment of God, vv. 12—13. God has not destined us for wrath, but we will be judged, 1 Thess. 5:9, 1 Cor. 3:11—15. By our words, Matt. 5:21-26, 33-37; 7:1-5, 21-23. By our actions, Col. 3:22-25. By our attitudes, Matt. 18:21-35. By the perfect Law of Liberty, James 2:12-13.

Spiritual life principle application: So speak and so act as those who will be judged by the perfect law of liberty. For who we really are is revealed by what we do. Which characters do you identify with in James’ story today?
