Results of the American Civil War

April 9, 1865 – Treaty at Appomattox Court House ends the Civil War Terms of the treaty state that the Confederate army lays down their arms, and go home

2/3 of the southern shipping industry was destroyed

9,000 miles of railroad destroyed

Southern farm property values dropped by 70%

Northern deaths totaled approximately 364,000 Southern deaths totaled approximately 260,000

Over 660,000 total Union casualties, and over 480,000 total Confederate casualties.

Over 211,000 total Union prisoners of war, of which over 30,000 died during the war. Over 460,000 total Confederate prisoners of war, of which over 25,000 died during the war.

The war cost approximately $5 billion to run.

4 million freed slaves, totaling approximately $3 billion in property value to Southern plantation owners

The “Captured and Abandoned Property Act” allowed the federal government to seize $100 million in southern plantations and cotton
