Human Rights Violations in Chile A 1973 military coup lifted Augusto Pinochet to the presidency. Human rights violations were rampant during his regime. At least 70 people were murdered on the Death Caravan, while at least three thousand more were killed during the next 16 years under Pinochet. Concentration camps were established throughout the country and many who opposed Pinochet disappeared and were never found. Bone splinters were found in limestone oven in Lonquén.

Chile at the UN Chile has been an active member of the Commission on Human Rights since 1947. It served its most recent term on the ECOSOC body from 2002-2004. Because of its past, Chile is extremely sensitive to human rights violations. The country is currently working to secure the rights of women, children, and indigenous peoples. Chile has also been involved in many peacekeeping operations. Part of their mission in this is to supervise the compliance with human rights.
