Writing Mastery of writing concepts Capitalization and Punctuation Complete sentences Plan and write at least one paragraph with specific details and support Indenting Follow the writing process – Plan, draft, revise, publish Students in third grade should be able to write sentences that include details or information to expand on their ideas.

Words Their Way Initial Inventory

Words Their Way After the initial spelling inventory students are placed in a spelling pattern sort based on the sound/spellings they had spelled correctly on the initial spelling inventory.

Words Their Way Students practice their sound/spelling patterns during the week while playing various games and activities with the sort.

Words Their Way Individualized towards your child’s sound/spelling needs. Students are given the spelling inventory throughout the year to assess if they need to jump ahead to move back and take time to relearn a sound/spelling.

Math Math is taught using the CRA approach. C- Concrete Example: 3.OA.1 Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 x 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. C- Concrete R- Representational A- Abstract

Math Importance of conceptual understanding Concept vs. procedure Topics and strategies are introduced in a very systematic way so that they build on previous learning Computation alone is not math. Students need to understand the concept, or the why behind each operation, in order to effectively problem solve

Math There are four main areas within the third grade standards that students should have a strong mastery of: Multiplication & Division Fractions Area & perimeter Geometry with two-dimensional figures

Math Third Grade Math Homework is mostly focused on Fact Fluency! Optional resources: Sumdog Tenmarks Khan Academy Math Playground

Math Fact Fluency Fearsome Fifteen Breaks facts down from the easiest facts to the hardest ones. Students will take fluency assessments weekly.

Ways we DIFFERENTIATE Math: -Enrichment, On level, or Reteach classwork/homework -In class remediation or enrichment small groups during Math Dolphin Time -Math Games/Centers for each objective Reading: -Guided reading groups -Leveled text in class with skill and vocabulary practice -Words Their Way is individualized spelling lists based on learning gaps from pre-test -Small group instruction instruction
