Mark’s Gospel Revision Chapter 2 – Conflict and Argument

2.1 Jesus heals a paralysed man How did this healing lead to conflict? (8) Blasphemy Popularity He proves that the sins were forgiven Humiliation 2. Why is this healing important for Christians today? (8) Priests have the authority to forgive sins God heals Importance of faith Many witnesses, it is likely to have been true

2.2 Disagreements about the Sabbath How did it lead to conflict? Humiliated the leaders Broke the law The authorities were looking for trouble Jesus was popular/ showed his power The authorities were wrong and Jesus had to cause conflict to allow changes to be made. BACK

2.2 Disagreements about the Sabbath Christians TODAY -Community Cohesion Different faiths have different special days. You cannot make everybody observe all of them. It is right to do good – supporting and providing for your family and community is good on any day. Employers should not be forced to allow “holy” days off. Not all people are religious. It can damage a company to have to allow all the days off. Back

2.3 The trouble with the Law Why is this passage important for Christians today? (8 marks Teach Christians - Cohesion Does not matter what you eat Fewer restrictions help cohesion Focus on all people rather that laws (regardless of religion) The sins mentioned all hurt others- we should avoid this

2.4 Jesus predicts his Passion What is the significance of these passages to Christians today? (8) Evidence of Messiah- predicting the future Death deliberate- in control Disciples failed- forgiveness/encouragement for us Shows that Jesus was not trying to get rid of the Romans. Not a failure. Son of man- code for son of God/Messiah Mark may make it look deliberate

2.5 Jesus Enters Jerusalem Why is this passage significant for Christians today? (8) Jesus is the Messiah- he was recognised by the people He fulfilled the Prophecy He is pure- symbolised by the donkey He is the Son of God- miracle of the colt Jesus rides on a donkey not war horse because he enters the city in peace. This is celebrated on Palm Sunday. Christians give out palm crosses and re-enact the procession.

2.6 Jesus clears out the Temple How is this passage significant for Christians today? (8) Shows Jesus is the Messiah We must respect the house of God- Cathedrals and churches Jesus was deliberately causing trouble- death was deliberate It is ok to be angry for the right reasons God is for all nations- cleared out the court of the gentiles

2.7 Who is in authority here How is this significant for Christians today? (8) Jesus is the Messiah It means that we can stand up against authorities if the authorities go against God. We can break the law if it goes against God’s rules The leaders are trying to trap him and get rid of him for the wrong reasons. He was who he said he was.

2.8 A Taxing Question Why is this passage significant for Christians today? (8)

2.8 A Taxing Question - Conflict They were looking for conflict He made them look foolish Pharisees and Herodians are working together. This shows how much they already hated Jesus He is saying that they should pay taxes Some may be confused by this and argue

2.9 Jesus’ Argument with the Sadducees EXPLAIN WHY JESUS’ARGUMENT WITH THE SADDUCEES ABOUT RESURRECTION IS IMPORTANT FOR CHRISTIANS TODAY? 1 P – THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO DON’T BELIEVE IN LIFE AFTER DEATH E- THE SADDUCEES DIDN’T AS THEY TOOK THEIR BELIEF FROM THE TORAH E- BY JESUS MAKING IT VERY CLEAR TO THESE JEWISH LEADERS IT ALLOWS US CHRISTIANS TODAY TO BELIEVE IN LIFE AFTER DEATH. 2 P – BECAUSE WE CAN BLEIEVE IN LIFE AFTER DEATH IT GIVES US HOPE E- WE MAY NOT HAVE A GOOD LIFE ON EARTH – DEATH/DISEASE E – THEREFORE IF LIFE IS NOT GOOD ON EARTH IT GIVES US HOPE OF THAT THIS EXPERIENCE WILL CHANGE IN HEAVEN. 3 P- SOMETIMES WE DON’T LIVE GOOD LIVES E- WE STEAL / LIE ETC E – KNOWING THAT THERE IS A LIFE AFTER DEATH CAN HELP US TO ENUSRE THAT WE DO OUR BEST TO LIVE A GOOD HOLY LIFE 4 P – IT REASSURES US THAT WE WILL FIND GOD AFTER DEATH E – LIFE ON EARTH WILL LEAD TO LIFE AFTER DEATH E- THAT TIME SPEANT IN EARTH PRAYING AND BEING CHRISTIAN IS NOT WASTED AND WE WILL FIND GOD

2.9 Jesus’ Argument with the Sadducees Why might this have led to conflict? 8 marks Humiliated them in front of a crowd They were looking for conflict. The question was unanswerable Jesus proves them wrong using their own law against them It would have caused conflict with the Pharisees who thought that the resurrection was not until the end of time

2.10 Expensive perfume at Bethany Why it led to conflict She may have seemed too close to Jesus- over familiar She predicts his death which has led to conflict in the past even with the disciples She has wasted money that could have been spent on the poor She suggests that he is the Messiah. This is controversial and possible blasphemy

2.11 The Plot to Kill Jesus Explain why the plot to kill Jesus is significant. (8)
