LACROSSE

Lacrosse Lacrosse requires a lot of strength and endurance depending on the position. Defensive players require more strength. Midfield players require more endurance.

What is a Concussion? A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that affects your brain function. Effects are usually temporary but can include headaches and problems with concentration, memory, balance and coordination.

Cause of Injury by a blow to the head violent shaking over the head or upper body Ex: Getting hit in the head or chest by a defender

Signs and Symptoms Headaches or neck Difficulty remembering, concentrating, or making decisions Confusion Tiredness Changes in sleep patterns Vomiting

Signs and Symptoms Cont Light-headedness, dizziness, or loss of balance Increased sensitivity to lights, sounds, or distractions Blurred vision Loss of sense of smell/taste Ringing in the ears

How does a concussion affect the body? The  brain suffers damage Cause you to feel dizzy/ hazed Symptoms can last for long time periods

What if they continue to play? Further damage may occur Permanent damage may occur

Who is prevalently affected by concussions? Athletes that play contact sports Examples include lacrosse, football, and wrestling

Assessment of Injury Standardized Assessment Of Concussion (SAC) Orientation (ask the month or day) Immediate memory (repeat after me now) Neurological signs such as…  Consciousness, coordination, strength, concentration, sensation Exertional maneuvers (jumping jacks, squats) Delayed recall (repeat after me, ask for recall later)

Diagnosis of Injury Neurological examination vision, hearing, strength, sensation, coordination, reflexes Cognitive testing memory, concentration, ability to recall information

Treatment of Injury Pain reliever (Tylenol) Rest Limit light Limit mental concentration

Rehabilitation of Injury At doctors orders… Feeling better? Resume to light activity Light thinking activates Start slow, work your way up
