Personal Learning Planning is a process which is built around the idea that children learn best when they: Understand clearly what they are learning Understand clearly why they are learning Know what is expected of them Are given feedback about the quality of their work Are given advice about how to improve their work Are involved in deciding what needs to be done next

Learning Logs Within our school we believe that Personal Learning Planning is an key part of practice. We use Learning Logs as a method of talking to children about their learning. Learning Logs are a practical and visual resource for children to support them in discussing their goals, what and how they learn and opportunities to identify next steps. Learning Logs also provide evidence for children about their progress.

Personal Learning Planning through learning Logs should be: Engaging and active Setting challenging goals Sharing expectations and standards Giving timely, accurate feedback Sharing learning intentions and success criteria Collaboration between teacher and children Address the different ways different learners progress (Building the Curriculum 3)

Our Learning Logs Our Learning Logs are recorded in yellow jotters. Recording in Learning Logs happens as the pupil experiences new things, making the Learning Log an ongoing piece of work. Learning Logs help the pupil learn from experience – by looking back on their progress they are able to plan the next steps in their learning. This ensures that pupils have a clear understanding of where they are going and how they are going to get there. Staff will be developing how we use them with children over the course of this year.

Key Points: Learning Logs are not in addition to on-going classwork but part of it. Learning Logs are for the benefit of the learner and can be seen as a working document journaling their learning. Learning Logs will be shared with parents throughout the school session e.g. at parents meetings, during open events, on regular agreed fixed dates, at appropriate times for classes selected by stage teams.

Recording Achievement and Progress Pupil achievement and progress will be recorded in Blue Folders This folder will be used by pupils and staff to collect evidence of learning and achievement. The folder will contain the following sections: Literacy Numeracy Other Areas Selected Assessments Achievements.

Literacy, Numeracy and Other Areas These sections will be used to collate evidence of learning. Pupils will be encouraged to select a piece of work and to reflect on how this provides good evidence of learning and to consider their next steps. Children will add to these sections on average once per term, so there will be at least three new pieces of work in each section, each academic year.

Selected Assessments This area will mainly be completed by staff who will include summative assessments of learning. These may include: reading scores, maths check-ups, screening results, spelling checks and other appropriate assessment evidence.

Work will be added to the folder at certain times in the school year. The folder will be sent home as part of a Learning Portfolio once every 6 weeks

Achievement Achievement is defined as something your child, their teacher or you as their parent/carer are proud of or think is significant and can take place both in and out of school. Achievement can include a variety of different things such as: Work in class Effort and behaviour Overcoming a difficulty Extra curricular activities Certificates and awards Anything your child values

Achievements This area will be used to keep a record of certificates and achievements. Children are encouraged to bring in certificates or photographs of activities from outside school to add to their Achievement Folder.

How can you help at home? As you look at your child’s work in their Learning Portfolios please talk to your child about the work it contains and perhaps ask some of these key questions. What were you learning? What were you doing? How did you do it? Can you tell me what you did? Did you do this on your own?
