Agenda Overview/Introductions Response to Intervention, KSI Sense-Making Number Properties Literature Connection Strategies for Number Sense Conceptual Change Model Reflections

Advance Organizer Focus for today: What is Number Sense, and why is it critical to the teaching and learning of mathematics?? Leadership - Kentucky System of Interventions : What is your current role…? How can literature be used in your classroom/school/district…? How does Number and Computation evolve across the K-12 math curriculum? Big Rocks?

Literature Connection Leo the Late Bloomer

Literature Connection Leo File/Link was here

Introductions: Who are we as a learning community? Years of Experience in MLSN 1, 2, 3, 4, 5? Current Role – Teacher, Administrator, Math/Curriculum Coach, Co-Op/KDE, Other? Grade Level - Primary, Intermediate, Middle, High, Higher Ed?

Instruction/Assessment MLSN 2008 - 2009 Number Sense Leadership/Change Instruction/Assessment RTI,KSI Have this slide showing when people arrive.

Making Sense of NUMBER Laying the K-12 Groundwork Instructional Implications Assessment Strategies Interventions

CHANGE LEADERSHIP… A Practical Guide to Transforming Our Schools… To prepare students to be successful in their post-graduate world…what’s it going to take? Reform vs Reinvention

With your talking partner, discuss the difference between Reform & Reinvention …in your math classrooms …in your school…

CHANGE LEADERSHIP… A Practical Guide to Transforming Our Schools… “There is no school for leaders that will teach them exactly how to make their district into one that will leave no child behind….”

MLSN and KSI (Kentucky System of Intervention) Where are we in our plans?

Agree on the 3 – Tier Model? Tier III 1 – 5% Specific, intensive Tier II 5 – 10% Supplemental, small group instruction Tier I 80 – 90% All students Preventive/Proactive Agree on the 3 – Tier Model?

Your Math Intervention Plan depends on… The students in your classroom/building The teachers in your classroom/building The resources in your classroom/building It has to be uniquely yours…..

Key Considerations in your plan: 1. Your ASSESSMENT tools What assessments are you using to determine student success and which students need help? “If we don’t trust the assessment, we won’t value the data.”

2. How many STUDENTS appear to be “at risk?” Are 80% of your students not meeting state standards? If so, it’s a C/I issue. -Is the issue true for all classes? -Is the issue true for 1 teacher? -How many students enter/leave a class performing at grade level?

3. How confident and competent are we with our…. -Resources/Materials 3. How confident and competent are we with our… -Resources/Materials? -Time/Scheduling? -Instructional Practice?

Tier I Consists of quality classroom instruction based on curriculum frameworks Intervention is done within the general framework of the classroom Curricula offerings are based on scientific research

Tier I, cont’d Focuses on improving the core classroom instruction that all students receive Uses a variety of grouping formats (indiv., pairs, small groups, etc.)

Good Teaching with Good Materials Tier I is…. Good Teaching with Good Materials

If “good math instruction” is a critical component of Tier 1… If “good math instruction” is a critical component of Tier 1…. What does that look like?

With your table group, brainstorm a list of “looking fors…” in a classroom with quality math instruction.
