There are strategies for every possible aspect of language learning. I have listed a few pages here as a sample.

Strategies for Visual Knowledge GOAL: STRATEGY Camera Shots Identify the different types of camera shots and their purposes. Would you have done it the same way? Why/why not? Cultural or Historical Links Complete background research prior to viewing the text. Draw a timeline including events that would have happened then in history. Symbols Look for stereotyping and symbols that may have cultural or historical links. How have they been used?

Strategies for Visual Knowledge GOAL: STRATEGY Plot Recount the orientation, complication and resolution in three to four sentences. Draw a tension graph or a story map. Character Analysis Create a character wheel. Identify the major and minor characters. Draw their images exaggerating their characteristics. Who is invaluable to the plot? Can you see changes in their personalities, beliefs or values? Language Choices Substitute synonyms for key concepts. Has this changed the meaning of the text?

Strategies for Text Knowledge GOAL: STRATEGY Sentence starters Rearrange the sentence to begin with a preposition (in, over, by), subordinate clauses (As John arrived, …), participle ending in ‘ed’ or ‘ing’ (galloping, helped by) infinitive verb (to escape), adverb (calmly), or repetitive structures designed for impact (Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink). Active or Passive voice. Paragraph openers Topic sentences link ideas to the previous paragraph. Linking and connecting words such as conjunctions (consequently, meanwhile) Create a list of useful words/sentence starters.

Strategies for Text Knowledge GOAL: STRATEGY Reference items Use pronouns (I, they, you) or determiners (a, this, several, mine) Develop a table to refer to. Logical connection of ideas Referring back to what was stated previously, saying it differently but what is being referred to should still be clear. Keep like ideas together. Create a mind map before starting. Plan your texts before drafting.

Strategies for Grammar Knowledge GOAL: STRATEGY Varied sentence types Simple, compound and complex sentences Selected for a purpose. Expand sentences. A sentence must have at least one verb. Correct punctuation Read aloud to indicate full stops. Avoid the temptation to use a comma as a full stop. Learn/find the rules for the different punctuation marks. Dialogue New line for each new speaker. Include speech marks. Treat the dialogue as if it were a sentence with the full stop after the identification of the speaker.

Strategies for Grammar Knowledge GOAL: STRATEGY Verbs Colour coded tenses timeline - past, present or future highlight in different colours. Agreement - subject/verb - singular/plural Parts of Speech Highlight, in different colours, the parts of speech. Build a sentence up from the verb (process); add the participants (nouns or pronouns), qualifiers for participants, and circumstances to build detail. Perspectives Whose point of view?(first, second, third person) Include feelings, emotions, evaluation and judgments with varying degrees of intensity and certainty.

Strategies for Word Knowledge GOAL: STRATEGY Spelling Proof read text. Have a go at correcting the spelling. Ask a buddy to check the text. Use spell checker on computer. Use another word you can spell. Spelling Error Identification Understand the types of errors you make in your spelling. Develop a spelling strategy to overcome this type of error. Rules for spelling Learn/find a rule for the words you misspell.

Strategies for Word Knowledge GOAL: STRATEGY Vocabulary Expand the words you know and use. Write your own glossary for new topics. Create a Word Bank of new or misspelt words. Nominalisation Explore creating nouns from other parts of speech and vice versa eg verbs and adjectives>nouns and nouns>verbs and adjectives Word Games Commercial, online or every day games eg scrabble, hangman, cloze exercises
