MAKING THE MOST OF OUR NEW ONLINE and INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT Patricia Baia, PhD Associate Director of Online Learning and Instructional Technology Room W123 / P: 518.445.2366 E-mail: pbaia@albanylaw.edu

Lets start an ongoing conversation: How might I help YOU? What specific topics would you like to know more about? (e.g. further develop your own distinctive pedagogy, online learning, incorporating technology into your course, overcoming an instructional challenge, curriculum and instruction scholarship, etc.)

Associate Director of Online Learning and Instructional Technology Vision Online Learning and Instructional Technology at Albany Law School is committed to academic excellence through teaching and learning research, best practices, faculty and student needs, evaluation and assessment, focused and supported innovation, and professional development. Mission Lead and educate campus community to shape online learning, instructional technology, and course design practices which support teaching and learning.

Goal Support and Promote the design, development and delivery of Web-enhanced, hybrid, and online instruction Face-to-face (f2) instruction with instructional technology.  Audience Faculty, Adjuncts, and Staff!

Objective 1 Personalized attention Based on faculty needs Portal Easy contact Fast turn around Assist faculty to be successful teachers and students be successful learners by providing easy access to resources, tutorials, and support.

Objective 2 Web-enhanced, Hybrid, Online Canvas/TWEN F2f – Instructional Technology Course development, design, and pedagogical growth Innovation direction/support Learning theory, objectives, cognitive alignment, teaching strategies, assessment development, feedback, organization, etc. Workshops, trainings, one-on-ones Provide technical support and pedagogical development to integrate online and instructional technology effectively

Create, Guide, and Support Online Learning and Programs Objective 3 Online Learning Steering Committee (Department/Program/Quality/etc.) Admin of LMS’s Canvas and TWEN Implement successful standards/best practices/tracking Help “morf” f2f content to online format Online Learning Consortium (OLC) membership/benefits Conference attendance, community, education, research, etc. Create, Guide, and Support Online Learning and Programs

Objective 4 Professional development opportunities Teaching, Cognitive and Social Presence (CoI) Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Organization Active Learning Multimodal Teaching Promote engagement, critical thinking, and effective communication for teaching and learning

Overview of Faculty Burdens Education is challenged to change as innovations change the way we think about interactions with information and knowledge. New generations of Students pass through with new expectations and new needs. Levels of readiness and expertise for Faculty become increasingly important. Professors are over extended, trying to find the balance between teaching, service, and scholarship. I want to understand these 4 areas and build on exiting knowledge and add to the field, inform and develop new knowledge

Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge Integration and intersection of three key knowledge areas where teachers need to be effective: a) Technology Knowledge - knowledge of technology as a resource and tool for teaching, b) Pedagogical Knowledge - knowledge of teaching theory and practice as it relates to learning, and c) Content Knowledge - knowledge of a specialized topic area. Lifelong learning of pedagogical and technological knowledge is accepted as necessary for the preparation of pre-service teachers in K-12 education, but not in higher education. While content knowledge (i.e. chemistry, law, pharmacy, humanities, etc.) is typically emphasized as a critical component for professors, the other two areas are not as well recognized. Mishra, P & Koehler, M. (2006). Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge: A Framework for Teacher Knowledge. Teachers College Record Volume 108 Number 6, 2006, p. 1017-1054 Reproduced by permission of the publisher, © 2012 by http://tpack.org

Practically I’m thinking about… Teaching Practice Research Students Faculty Professional Development Active Learning Problem Solving Learning Lecture Online Learning Course Design Assessment Instructional Technology Teaching Strategies Groups Exams Application/Lab Learning Outcomes Hybrid Pedagogy Content Theory Motivation Grading Lifelong Learning Course Evaluations Engagement

Theoretically I think about… The unity needed between content, pedagogy, and technology. Challenges Faculty have as they continue to teach and as innovations surface. What Faculty and the Institution value. Motivations, human characteristics, and change: psychological dimensions
