Is Electricity The Way forward? The T.27 Electric Car

Background Gordon Murray Design, are a Surrey based company, whose founder has a history in Formula 1. The newest development from the group is the T.27, an electric version of an earlier petrol powered car. With this new product GMD hope to fully optimise weight, performance and overall efficiency to achieve greater sustainability. “As we head towards the new industrial revolution brought about by rising energy costs and concern over the effects of greenhouse gases, we at Gordon Murray Design feel proud to be working with the Technology Strategy Board in helping the UK play a leading role in tackling the issues we all face.” Gordon Murry http://www.gordonmurraydesign.com/press-T27-zytek.php

Design & Materials Weight- Reduced energy is required to power the vehicle, giving rise to higher fuel efficiency and extended component life. Size- The external dimensions allow to driver to park at 90 degrees to the curb, this creates space for up to 3 T27’s in just one parallel parking spot. Layout- The central driving position promotes safety and ease of parking as a result of excellent all-round visibility and road awareness.

iStream iStream is a production process with its main focus on separate body and chassis assembly. In the early stages, the battery, wiring, brakes, suspension and all major components can be fitted directly into the chassis base. The body is then connected to the base of the vehicle once major components are fitted. This reduces paint damage and the need for retouches. It also lowers vehicle complexity and length of repairs.

Sustainability Outline The simplified assembly process means that the manufacturing plant can be designed to be 20% of the size of a conventional factory. Having a smaller factory not only means set up costs are lowered but the site can be located closer to market thus reducing transportation and distribution costs, which in turn will decrease vehicle sale price.

Vs Competitors The T.27 is lighter and smaller than any of its nearest rivals, such as the Smart and Mini Cooper. Not only does its compatibility put it ahead of others in the market but also with an electric motor, low carbon emissions and the iStream process this product could be at the forefront of the future and other vehicles to come.
