2014 Explorer for Institutions v1 2016 Explorer for Institutions v2

How does it work at Altmetric?

TRACKING A RESEARCH OUTPUT An output (journal article, dataset, etc) An identifier attached to the output (DOI, PMID, etc) Mentions in a source

Twitter, Facebook, Google+, News outlets & Blogs Over 2000 news sites Global coverage 9,000+ Blogs Post-publication peer review Publons Pubpeer Policy documents NICE Evidence Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Many more… Other sources Syllabi NEW Scopus Citations NEW Wikipedia Youtube Reddit F1000 Q&A Reference managers Mendeley, Citeulike etc Reader counts Social media Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Public posts only

SCHOLARLY IDENTIFIERS TRACKED: MORE THAN DOIs General PubMed ID Health Sciences arXiv ID Physics, Mathematics & Computer Sciences ADS ID Astrophysics data system SSRN ID Social Sciences RePEC ID Economics ISBNs Handles ClinicalTrials.gov Records Medicine/biomedical URN Research Outputs

CAPTURING ATTENTION Follow a list of domains. E.g. nature.com, lse.ac.uk, figshare.com Search for links to those domains in attention sources. E.g. blogs, news, policy documents, social media. Collate attention. Disambiguation across different versions. Display data in Altmetric Details Pages.

ALTMETRIC ATTENTION SCORE Provides an indicator of the attention surrounding a research output. Volume Sources Authors The score for an article rises as more people mention it. Each source category contributes a different base amount to the final score. How often the author of each mention talks about scholarly articles influences the contribution of the mention. The Altmetric score is intended to provide an indicator of the attention surrounding a research output. Although it may be straightforward enough to monitor the attention surrounding one research output, for example, it becomes harder to identify where to focus your efforts when looking at a larger set. The number alone can of course not tell you anything about what prompted the attention, where it came from, or what people were saying, but it does at least give you a place to start – “is there online activity around this research output that would be worth investigating further?” The Altmetric score is an automatically calculated, weighted algorithm. It is based on 3 main factors: 1. The volume of the mentions (how many were there?) 2. The source of the mentions (were they high-profile news stories, re-tweets, or perhaps a Wikipedia reference?) 3. The author of the mentions (was it the journal publisher, or an influential academic?) Combined, the score represents a weighted approximation of all the attention we’ve picked up for a research output, rather than a raw total of the number of mentions. Read more about the score here: altmetric.com/blog/scoreanddonut/

Always look at what people are saying And not just at the numbers Attention doesn’t = quality

Altmetric Explorer for Institutions Search, filter, sort, save, analyze and export altmetrics data

Why did we build Explorer for Institution v2? We received lots of user feedback about v1 that we wanted to incorporate into the new platform. We wanted to… Make it easier for you to find relevant research outputs and Altmetric data. Help you to quickly see highlights of attention for your research outputs. Make it easier for you include Altmetric data in your reporting. @jean_draws Since January 2015, we have been developing the new version of Explorer for Institutions. With the assistance of 6 dedicated institutional development partners (participating in the Altmetric Beta Testing Programme), we worked to incorporate user feedback at every stage of development.

EFI v2 was released in September 2016! What’s new? The new Explorer for Institutions v2 (EFI v2) lets you… Find research outputs and their altmetrics data much more quickly Visualize the data in a more meaningful way Exciting features include: Powerful searching and sorting capabilities Richer visualizations for data reporting Beautiful, intuitive user interface EFI v2 was released in September 2016! In particular we decided to focus EFI v2 on the major use cases for researchers, research administrators, and librarians. We specifically wanted to make it easier to search for and report on relevant Altmetric data. The launch date for the first release of EFI v2 is 15 September, and a small number of customers will be rolled out to the new platform. Following the official launch date, we will continue to add new features and roll-out the new version to our customers around the world. One of the new features “under the hood” is that the Explorer will now show ALL research outputs that have been provided to us by the institution through the data implementation – this means that we will generate Altmetric records for all research outputs from an institution regardless of whether or not that output has been mentioned before. As such, we are able to display citation counts and Mendeley readership for records that have no Altmetric score/attention.

What can the Altmetric Explorer help you with? Find research outputs Search for your institution’s research or dive into Altmetric’s database of over 7M research outputs. @jean_draws Discover Altmetric insights Uncover engagement, influence, and reach for your institution’s research, and visualize the data beautifully. Report on key achievements Incorporate Altmetric data into impact case studies and other reports. @jean_draws

Detailed search results Prominent search bar Find research outputs Results analysis Report on key achievements Detailed search results Discover Altmetric insights The new Explorer interface is centered around 3 important facets: Finding research outputs (with a prominent search bar) Discovering Altmetric insights (with a detailed search result section) Reporting on key achievements (with a comprehensive results analysis section)

Overview of key features Browse altmetrics for your institution and search across the entire database Filter by your authors and departments Search by item type: articles, data sets, books, etc. Save searches and export data Sort results by Altmetric Attention Score, mention source, or publication date Analyze results

Demo!

Altmetrics in practice @jean_draws

Demonstrating research engagement Altmetric help you meet reporting requirements and showcase your research: REPORTING Grant applications Funder reporting Reputation management Benchmarking and KPIs Recruitment & review SHOWCASING Identifying research to share Integration in profiles/IRs Impact on public policy Identifying key researchers Recognizing ECRs DISCOVERY Finding trending research Identifying collaborators Collection development Encourage IR/CRIS deposit Liaison - share top mentions
