Spring 2016 PARCC and MCAS Results: Newton Public Schools Mary Eich, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Katy Hogue, District Student Data Manager January 9, 2017

Overall Student Performance Newton continues to be a very high-performing district Grades 3-8 82% of students met expectations* in ELA PARCC 77% of students met expectations* in Math PARCC 67% of students scored Proficient or Advanced in 5th Grade Science MCAS 57% of students scored Proficient or Advanced in 8th Grade Science MCAS High School 98% of students scored Proficient or Advanced in ELA MCAS 94% of students scored Proficient or Advanced in Math MCAS 93% of students scored Proficient or Advanced in High School Science MCAS *For PARCC, a performance level of 4 or 5 indicates that a student “met expectations”

Accountability Proficiency gap-narrowing targets MET for most subgroups DID NOT MEET targets for: African American/Black students in ELA, Math, or Science Hispanic/Latino students in ELA or Math Growth targets for all subgroups MET EXCEPT for students with disabilities in Math Graduation and dropout rates: All graduation rate targets MET All dropout rate targets MET EXCEPT for ELL and Former ELL students Newton is a Level 2 district

What the Results Tell Us Overall Average student performance is high Most students are performing well Overall, Mathematics, English Language Arts and Grade 9 Physics curricula are well-aligned to MA DESE standards based on district- level performance We still have significant achievement gaps High School subgroup achievement gaps are relatively narrow
