The US Constitution and Government By Mrs. Moore

The Constitution The Articles of Confederation were not working The Constitutional Convention met to re-plan the government It is based on the idea that government comes directly from the people, so it begins “We, the People…”

The Constitution and slaves, women, Native Americans The Constitution describes equality as All men are created equal like the Declaration of Independence Woman could not vote Native Americans were considered to be the same as foreign countries. Slaves had no rights. Northern states began to emancipate them, but Southern States stopped this from being allowed.

Compromises 3/5 Compromise The Great Compromise Slaves would be counted as 3/5 of a person The slave trade would end in 1808 The Great Compromise The number of representatives a state can have will be based on the states population The number of senators per state will be 2

Federalists v. Anti-Federalists Supported the ratification of the Constitution Anti-Federalists Did not want to ratify the Constitution They Thought it gave the federal government too much power. They were afraid of being ruled by another king

The Bill of Rights The first ten amendments to the Constitution Guarantee rights of individuals and limits the power of the government https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlt6R1KD4E0

How are the Constitution and Bill of Rights Similar and different?

The Three Branches of Government Legislative Executive Judicial Each has specific powers but check and balance each other

Legislative Branch Made up of Congress which is divided into: House of Representatives The Senate Main job is to write, debate and pass bills The president must sign the bill for it to become law. The president may also veto the bill and send it back to congress. The legislature can check the president by overriding his vetoes with a 2/3 majority vote. Congress also has to approve judges appointed by the president. Congress also has the right to declare war. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyeJ55o3El0

Executive Branch The President is the head of the Executive Branch. The branch is located in the White House_. The President carries out or executes laws. He may also suggest laws to the legislative Branch. The President has the power to veto any laws that he doesn’t agree with. The President appoints judges to the Supreme court. The President is the Commander in Chief of the United States Armed Forces.
