Presentation transcript:

Joint Expert Group on Dynamic Modelling (JEG DM) current status 16th JEG DM meeting was held in October 2016 in Sitges, Spain Meeting attracted 18 experts took part (Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and United States of America). ICP Waters, Integrated Monitoring, Modelling and Mapping, the Task Force on Integrated Assessment Modelling, and the Bureau of the Working Group on Effects. Next meeting (17th) will be held in October 25. – 27. 2017, Sitges, Spain

JEG DM current situation Bottom-up interest in JEG exist, work continues within several groups involved, new results are/will be available ”Call for data” finished, delivery in both 2016 and in 2017, CCE still operational to synthesize the results. Key feature: modelling biodiversity change Interesting results, first synthesis over the whole Europe, new questions arised Focuss of JEG is broader, biodiversity change is (indeed) of interest, but other issues are also of interest/importance Swedish EPA continues to support JEG

Long-standing focus of JEG Impact of nitrogen as a nutrient in terrestrial and freshwater systems in general and on biodiversity in particular Interactions between N, C and P Interactions between air pollution, climate change and land use Biological responses and targets Recovery of air pollution affected ecosystems Modelling heavy metals Modelling ozone impacts Interfacing with global scale models Dynamic modelling in international policies User interfaces and visualisation of model outputs Consistency in approach under different international policies and Conventions

Focus on nitrogen, more work needed… to connect to groups with data on nitrogen effects on nature, (monitoring, manipulation experiments and historical data to constrain the models) start discussions on how best to cover the presently not covered nature types in the scientific framework of the Air convention.

JEG 2017 objectives (a) to examine progress in dynamic modelling of acidification, nutrient nitrogen and heavy metals; of climate change/air pollution/land use interactions; (b) to provide forum for interactions, discussion and co-operation between ICPs, with other Convention bodies (c) to discuss role of JEG DM within, and cooperation outside the Convention (EU research projects, WFD, CBD);

JEG DM – as an expert group within WGE it is opened for anyone within the Convention Dynamic Modelling undertaken in all WGE bodies should be represented (that is the ambition) DM outside CLRTAP is of great interest, cooperation is seeked Meetings run Wednesday lunch to Friday lunch, these are very informal, the goal is to present and to discuss the latest in DM. Focuss is on science. Those who are potentially interested and who not regularly receiving information about JEG DM, please contact Filip Moldan during this meeting or at: filip.moldan@ivl.se
