Sigmund Freud Father of Psychology Mr. Meester AP European History

Early Development Sigmund Freud was born in a small village in Austria to a Jewish family. His career choices were limited due to his heritage. 1881 he earned his doctorate in medicine with neurology as his focus.

Hypnosis & Hysteria Early in his career he was intrigued by hypnosis as a way understanding the human mind. Freud at first believed it could be used in the study and treatment of hysteria. Later he stopped using hypnosis and simply let his patients talk about themselves. This would be the beginning of psychology

Childhood Development Freud found that childhood & sexual experiences seemed significant to the patient’s problems. Developed the theory of infantile sexuality People are sexual creatures from birth A healthy view on sex was one of the bases for a healthy mental state

Dream Analysis The first scientist to examine, analyze, and study dreams. He concluded dreams were the unconscious coming to the surface. “The dream, is the disguised fulfillment of the suppressed or repressed wish.” The conscious mind censors our thoughts and our dreams represent these thoughts.

Later Theories Our unconscious mind influences our conscious actions. The mind is divided into 3 parts: Id: amoral, irrational, instinctual, pleasure oriented Superego: embodies external morality Ego: mediates demands of the Id & Superego Influenced by both the Romantics and the Enlightenment.
