Fault = a break in earth’s crust where rock surfaces slip past each other.
Usually occur along plate boundaries, where the forces of plate motion cause the crust to break. Southern California
Normal Fault Tension (pull apart) • Fault is at an angle. • Hanging wall slips down footwall. • Where crust diverges (or pulls apart). Hanging wall Foot wall
What are a “hanging wall” and “footwall?”
Normal Fault
Reverse Fault Compression (push together) • Same structure as a normal fault, but opposite movement. • Hanging wall slides up footwall. • Where crust converges (pushes together). Hanging wall Foot wall
Reverse Faults
Strike-Slip Fault Shearing motion. • Rocks on either side slip past each other sideways. • Transform (sliding) movements. • Ex. San Andreas Fault in CA.
