1 What is the Great Shake Out?

2 THE DYNAMIC EARTH

3

4 EARTHQUAKES

5 Earthquake Release of energy when pressure and/or stress is built up between rocks Usually occurs along faults and plate boundaries Causes the area of rock to snap when energy is rapidly released in all directions along seismic waves

6 Earthquake Terms FOCUS – actual location of where the earthquake originates EPICENTER – Surface directly above focus

7 FAULT - Fractures or cracks on earth’s surface that occur due to tectonic plate motion
Types of Faults Normal Fault Reverse Fault Strike-Slip Fault

8 Faults Normal fault Found in areas under tension
Where sections of the landscape are pulling apart (divergent) These mountains are a result of the continental crust being subjected to tension as the crust pulls apart Rock above the fault surface moves downward in relation to the rock below the fault surface. Called Fault Block Mountains Block moves downward

9

10 Faults (cont.) Reverse fault Found in areas under compression
Zones of convergence Rocks above the fault surface are forced up and over the rocks below the fault surface Like the Himalaya Mountains Block moves upward

11

12 Faults (cont.) Strike-slip faults
More horizontal movement than vertical movement Instead of moving up or down one another, the 2 rock surfaces slide past each other These boundaries are usually twisted or strained because irregular surfaces catch on each other Like the San Andreas fault in California
