Civil Disobedience

If you could end/change one thing, what would it be and why? Activator If you could end/change one thing, what would it be and why?

What is Civil Disobedience Using images below and your own inference – define “civil disobedience” – you may NOT use technology.

Civil Disobedience Think of one example from school where you could stage an act of civil disobedience.

Civil Disobedience

Monhandas (Mohatma)K. Ghandi Born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, India, Mahatma Gandhi studied law and advocated for the civil rights of Indians, both at home under British rule and in South Africa. Gandhi became a leader of India’s independence movement, organizing boycotts against British institutions in peaceful forms of civil disobedience. He was killed by a fanatic in 1948.

Martin Luther King Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and social activist, who led the Civil Rights Movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. In 1959, with the help of the American Friends Service Committee, and inspired by Gandhi's success with non-violent activism, Martin Luther King visited Gandhi's birthplace in India. The trip affected him in a deeply profound way, increasing his commitment to America's civil rights struggle. African-American civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, who had studied Gandhi's teachings, became one of King's associates and counseled him to dedicate himself to the principles of non-violence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBkgdGIBv00

Civil Disobedience - Today Please turn to page 389 Please partner read “Thoreau Still Bekons, if I Can Take My Laptop”

What would your own civil disobedience look like? With a partner, you will think of one school rule you agree with in general but think it needs to be changed perhaps because it is unclear or unfair. You will illustrate your issue on poster paper – be sure to answer the following questions: Tell: what the rule is Who/why is it unfair? What will your act of civil disobedience look like? What will the behavior expectations of the participants be? What will the short term results be? What is the long term goal?

`Re-read Lines 38-46 Restate: What does Thoreau mean by an “undue respect for law?” Talk with a partner and develop a paired response to share with the class. 5 Minutes to discuss and develop
