3 Who is Mahatma Gandhi? Mahatma Gandhi is a political campaigner who fought for Indian independence from British rule and for the rights of the Indian poor. His example of non-violent protest is still revered throughout the world today. He is the leader of India’s non- violent independence movement against British rule and in South Africa who advocated for the civil rights of Indians.

4 What was he known for? Mohandas Gandhi was famous for many things that are still amazing to people. He was famous for being a man that made a difference in the life of a whole country. Mohandas Gandhi was the an Indian who fought for Indians and their rights. He was famous for being a man who fought in a non-violence way to accomplish his goals. Mohandas Gandhi would have meeting, campaigns, and would fast to put pressure on the British. All throughout his life Gandhi fasted for long periods of time, (for 14 times) to save his people, country, and their rights.

5 Legacy of Gandhi Mohandas Gandhi was famous for organizing Natal (South Africa) Indian Congress. He also help people by raising Indian Ambulance Crops for British in Boer War. It is very interesting that even though British didn't like Indians and treated them badly, Gandhi still helped them when they were facing a bad situation in their lives just like the Boer War. Gandhi was a great man, leader of his country, husband, and father who never thought about himself. He always thought of others like his family, people, and country. Gandhi was a well respected man throughout his country and the entire world. He was and will always be famous for his great bravery and great heart

6 Continued… He helped the poor or so considered "untouchables". and treated everyone equally. In 1947 after lots of years of fighting for his country, Gandhi finally won his country's freedom. That is why he was and still is considered the father of his country. Mohandas Gandhi was also famous for helding a disobedience campaign against British rule in India, leading a 165 mile march to Gujrat Coast of the Arabian Sea. He produced salt by evaporation of sea water in violation of the law as a gesture of defiance against the British monopoly on salt production.

7 Reflection Even after Gandhi’s assassination, his commitment to nonviolence and his belief in simple living — making his own clothes, eating a vegetarian diet and using fasts for self-purification as well as a means of protest — have been a beacon of hope for oppressed and marginalized people throughout the world. Satyagraha remains one of the most potent philosophies in freedom struggles throughout the world today, and Gandhi’s actions inspired future human rights movements around the globe, including those of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. in the United States and Nelson Mandela in South Africa.
