ISA-SP84 Update: Functional Safety Bill Johnson, E.I. DuPont Chairman, ISA-SP84

ISA-SP84 Programmable Electronic Systems for Use in Safety Applications Membership: > 280 safety experts from user, supplier, and consulting companies across the processing and related industries Augmented by safety experts from key government and academic organizations Organized into several working groups – reflected in documents published and in development (as described in the following)

ISA-SP84 Milestones ANSI/ISA-84.00.01-2004 (IEC 61511 Modified) Parts 1-3: Functional Safety: Safety Instrumented Systems for the Process Industry Sector Modification / adoption of IEC 61511 Parts 1-3. Key change: addition of Grandfather Clause. Official notification (Nov. 2005) that the standards may be used in seeking compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119 regulations pertaining to the prevention and mitigation of accidents involving highly hazardous chemicals.

ISA-SP84 Milestones – cont. Two major ISA technical reports completed in 2005 to illustrate and promote the proper application of the three-part series of standards: ISA-TR84.00.04-2005 Part 1: Guideline on the Implementation of ANSI/ISA-84.00.01-2004 Parts 1-3 (IEC 61511 Mod) ISA-TR84.00.04-2005 Part 2: Example Implementation of ANSI/ISA-84.00.01-2004 Parts 1-3 (IEC 61511 Mod) Outstanding effort by ISA-SP84 Working Group 2 – led by Dr. Angela Summers

ISA-SP84: Work in Progress ISA-TR 84.00.06 - Safety Fieldbus Design Considerations for Process Industry Sector Applications First committee ballot completed September 2006. Many comments received – will be revised for a second ballot. ISA-SP84 Working Group 1 – Bob Adamski

ISA-SP84: Work in Progress – cont. ISA-TR84.00.05 - The Application of ANSI/ISA-84.00.01‑2004 Parts 1-3 (IEC 61511 Modified) for Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs) in Burner Management Systems. Target for first committee ballot: December 2006. ISA-SP84 Working Group 3 – Dennis Zetterberg

ISA-SP84: Work in Progress – cont. ISA-SP84 Working Group 6: Fire and Gas Spin-off of BMS Working Group. Meeting this week in Houston – developing reliability model to address differences between preventive and mitigative instrumented functions. Leaders: Mike Scott and Bob Seitz.

ISA-SP84: Work in Progress – cont. ISA-SP84 Working Group 4: Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) Issues for Safety Instrumented Systems. Collecting information on current industry practices. Leader: Tim Layer

ISA-SP84: Work in Progress – cont. Update / Maintenance: ISA-TR84.00.02-2002, Parts 1-5. Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF) – Safety Integrity Level (SIL) Evaluation Techniques. Working Group meeting this week in Houston. Leaders: Angela Summers and Larry Suttinger

ISA-SP84: Work in Progress – cont. Update / Maintenance: ISA-TR84.00.03-2002. Guidance for Testing of Process Sector Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF) implemented as or within Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) Initial Working Group meeting this week in Houston Leader: K. V. Gandhi

ISA-SP84 Outreach Key technical leadership and expertise provided to international standards development – most notably IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 Close working relationship with ISA-SP91, Criticality Ranking for Instrumentation Chairman: Richard Dunn Close working relationship with ISA Safety Technical Division
