AVID Advancement Via Individual Determination Purpose - increase the number of students enrolled in 4 year colleges

AVID’s History School wide approach Prepares all students for college 29 years of success In 3,500 schools In 45 states In 15 countries

Who qualifies for AVID? Students who could achieve at higher level but need resources and support Perform at level 2 AVID focuses on the “student in the middle” Student has strong desire to attend college AVID formula: raise expectations + AVID support = students rise to the challenge Student and parents/guardians buy in

How AVID works Students take AVID elective class + courses Learn Cornell note-taking and learning logs Organize binder Work with college-aged tutors Experience college and enrichment trips WIC-R (writing, inquiry, collaboration, reading) Enroll in Advanced placement and/or International Baccalaureate courses.

AVID Advisory at McKee Advisor is a facilitator. Students gain college prep skills Facilitates tutoring sessions Builds character development Prepares students for AP and IB classes Liaison between subject area teachers and students

Student Responsibilities in AVID Take AVID Elective Tutorial all 4 years Master Cornell note-taking in the core subject areas Maintain 90% attendance & punctuality Learn to maintan an organized binder College and enrichment trips Student and parent/caregiver buy-in

AVID Tutors Are college students majoring in education Selected by college Guided sessions with professor and McKee AVID Site Coordinator Monitors student progress From: St. John’s College Wagner College

Tutorial Program Ratio of tutors to students - 1:7 3-5 hours per week for the year College student tutors receive Training from professor on McKee campus from both the professor and AVID Site Coordinator Professional development

What happens in the AVID tutorial? Students present issues Tutors guide Tutors respond to journal entries and timed writings Tutors monitor the writing process: revisions Tutors write comments in binders Guides students through the learning process

Role of AVID Site Coordinator Meets with college student tutors Meets with Advisory teachers Discusses concerns, lessons, and classroom activities Liaison with Education Department of colleges Liaison with New York City representatives from AVID
