Section 2.1 Writing Equations Algebra 1

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to… Translate basic sentences into algebraic equations. Translate sentences in a context into algebraic equations. Solve the algebraic equation after translation.

Example 1 A. Translate this sentence into an equation. Translate Sentences into Equations A. Translate this sentence into an equation. A number b divided by three is equal to six less than c. b divided by three is equal to six less than c. = c – 6 Answer:

A. Translate this sentence into an equation A. Translate this sentence into an equation. A number c multiplied by six is equal to two more than d. A. 6c = d + 2 B. 2c = d + 6 C. c = d + 2 D. c = 6(d + 2)

Activity 1: Translating Sentences into Equations For the activity, in your groups, sort the verbal descriptions with its algebraic equation representation Make two columns Record 1-2 example/s in your CORNELL NOTES. Choose the examples to be varied so you have something solid to refer back to

Example 2 Translate Equations into Sentences A. Translate the equation into a verbal sentence. 12 – 2x = –5 12 – 2x = –5 Twelve minus two times x equals negative five. Answer: Twelve minus two times x equals negative five.

A. Translate the equation into a verbal sentence. A. Twelve minus four divided by b is negative one. B. Twelve less than four divided by b equals negative one. C. Four minus twelve divided by b equals negative one. D. Twelve divided by b minus four equals negative one.

Activity 2: Sorting Equations into Sentences For the next activity, in your groups, sort the verbal descriptions with its algebraic representation Make two columns Record 1-2 examples in your CORNELL NOTES. Choose the example/s to be varied so you have something solid to refer back to
