1 WARM UP Working with your partner, group the following word phrases with their corresponding inequality symbol. (<, >, ≤, ≥) No more than Greater than At least Fewer than Less than or equal to Greater than or equal to Less than At most More than No less than

2 Inequalities Book Section 1-5 (DAY 1)

3 Objective 1: Write an inequality from a sentence.
WORDS GRAPH 𝑥>4 greater than more than 𝑥≥4 greater than or equal to no less than at least 𝑥<4 less than fewer than 𝑥≤4 less than or equal to no more than at most

4 Objective 1: Write an inequality from a sentence.
Translate the words to algebra: 5 fewer than a number is at least 12. The product of 7 and a number is no more than 50.

5 Objective 2: Solve and graph inequalities.
Almost exactly the same as solving equations! Carry down the inequality symbol. FLIP the symbol when multiplying or dividing by a negative number on both sides. Remember: 3 < 5 BUT -3 > -5

6 Objective 2: Solve and graph inequalities.
4. You Try: 4 𝑥−7 >20

7 Objective 3: Write and solve inequalities to represent problems.
1. Define the variable Usually to ANSWER THE QUESTION! 2. Write the inequality Translate what you know 3. Solve and interpret Does it make sense?

8 Objective 3: Write and solve inequalities to represent problems.
5. Plumber A charges $75 for a service charge and $40 per hour. Plumber B charges $50 per hour but no service charge. How many hours must a plumbing job last for Plumber A to cost less than Plumber B?

9 EXIT SLIP 1. Translate to algebra: 2. Solve and graph: −3 2𝑥−5 +1≥4
“the quotient of a number and 2 is no less than 3” 2. Solve and graph: −3 2𝑥−5 +1≥4
