St Michael’s Home Learning Policy February 2017

Key Principles Home learning should reinforce prior learning. It provides an opportunity to revise recent learning in order to secure understanding and develop mastery eg the reading books sent home should provide opportunity for practice and shared enjoyment. The books should not be a struggle to read.

Key Principles The learning should be accessible for the child without the need for further explanation or teaching at home. Children should enjoy the experience of sharing new learning with their parents, but this learning should be something they are reasonably confident with. Home learning should not be stressful for the child or parent.

Key Principles Home learning should be relevant, interesting and appropriate in terms of time and content. Home learning should enhance learning in school and should not be seen as a ‘bolt on’.

Key Principles A key part of home learning is spending time together as a family. Developing children’s vocabulary can have a huge impact on all areas of the curriculum Visits to the library, a family outing, walks, trips to the park are equally as important as formal home learning and should never be underestimated in terms of their educational value.

Key Principles Home learning should gradually increase in time from Reception to Year 6 in order to prepare children for the demands of secondary school Home learning expectations should be consistent across cohorts being educated in different classes

Additional challenge St Michael’s subscribes to the MyMaths website and all pupils have their own log in. We would encourage pupils to use this resource if they would like an additional challenge or for extra practice.

And finally…… The children at St Michael’s work hard at school for 5 hours every day. They are challenged to work out of their comfort zone. When they come home they need their ‘down time’. The last thing we want to do is to put so much pressure on them that we put them off learning. We want to equip them with the skills they need to be lifelong learners. Enjoy letting them show you what they can do Have fun!
