1 YEAR 6 PARENT INFORMATION EVENING
Tuesday 3rd October 2017

2 WELCOME & INTRODUCTION
Assessment and the new National Curriculum Changes to End of Key Stage 2 SATs SATs 2018 Maths, Reading and GPS and writing assessment Week commencing Monday 14th May 2018. How attainment will be measured at the end of Key Stage. How parents can support.

3 ASSESSMENT & THE NEW NATIONAL CURRICULUM
On-going, daily assessments of children’s skills and understanding will continue The language of assessment is now focused on how a child is achieving against age-related expectations rather than levels. Working within the expected level of attainment for his/her age Working towards, below or beyond the expected level of attainment

4 ASSESSMENT IN LANCASHIRE
Lancashire has developed support materials for schools, for all subjects apart from RE, which detail the "key learning" for each year group (Y1-6), based on the revised national curriculum. Lancashire have also developed KLIPS= Key Learning Indicators of Performance. These are used in school to assess children on a termly basis in Y1 –Y6.

5 ASSESSMENT IN LANCASHIRE
The three definitions used here are offered as guidance to teachers making "best fit" judgements, at the end of each term. Entering Developing Secure

6 END OF KS2 (Y6) TESTS: At the end of year 6 children are assessed against ‘Interim Statements’ in the following areas: KS2 Reading: 1 paper (60 minutes) KS2 English Grammar Punctuation & Spelling: 2 papers GPS (45 mins) Spelling (15 mins) KS2 Maths: 3 papers Arithmetic (30 mins) Mathematical Reasoning (40 mins) KS2 Writing – teacher assessed

7 MATHEMATICS Arithmetic test (30 minutes)- Range of context free questions. Reasoning paper (40 minutes) – 40 marks in total.

8 MATHEMATICS - ARITHMETIC
Mental mathematics test removed. Arithmetic test introduced to assess basic mathematical calculations. 36 questions, 40 marks available, 30 minutes duration. Questions will consist of fixed response questions, where children have to give the correct answer to calculations, including long multiplication and division. * straight forward addition and subtraction *more complex calculations with fractions *long divisions and long multiplications.

9 MATHEMATICS – Sample Arithmetic questions

10 MATHEMATICS – PAPER 2 & 3: Problem Solving & Reasoning
Each lasting for 40 minutes. Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of question types, including: Multiple choice True or false Constrained questions, e.g. giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape or completing a table or chart Less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem in context

11 MATHEMATICS – Sample Paper 2/3 reasoning questions

12 MATHEMATICS – Sample Paper 2/3 reasoning questions

13 READING The Reading Test consists of a single test paper with three unrelated reading texts. Children are given 60 minutes in total, which includes reading the texts and answering the questions. A total of 50 marks are available. Questions are designed to assess the comprehension and understanding of a child’s reading. Some questions are multiple choice or selected response, others require short answers and some require an extended response or explanation.

14 SPELLING, PUNCTUATION & GRAMMAR
A Spelling test is administered containing 20 words, lasting approximately 15 minutes. A separate test is given on Punctuation, Vocabulary and Grammar This test lasts for 45 minutes and requires short answer questions, including some multiple choice. Marks for these two tests are added together to give a total for Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar.

15 SPELLING, PUNCTUATION & GRAMMAR – sample questions:

16 SPELLING, PUNCTUATION & GRAMMAR – sample questions:

17 How will attainment be measured?
Attainment will be measured by a scaled score, where 100 represents the national standard. Children working below 100 will be reported as working below the expected standard. Higher attainers may achieve a higher score.

18 WRITING – Teacher Assessment
Interim framework for KS2 English writing For KS2 English writing, teacher assessment is the primary outcome. The framework contains 3 standards: • Working towards the expected standard • Working at the expected standard • Working at a greater depth within the expected standard All writing is assessed through teacher assessment- evidence from throughout the year. Evidence gained from all books across the curriculum. Moderators may come into school to scrutinise teacher assessment judgements.

19 WRITING – Teacher Assessment
Interim framework for KS2 English writing continued: Exceptionally high standards for: Handwriting Spelling Grammar & punctuation. For children to be working at expected standard, they must consistently demonstrate ALL these features, ALL of the time: * update 2017/18

20 WRITING INTERIM STATMENTS:

21 Preparing the children in school:
The children will be working towards the Interim Statements throughout the year. Over the course of the year they will complete practice test papers. Time will be spent getting the children ready for the tests, especially in the Spring and Summer term. All children complete up to 5 pieces of independent assessed writing each half term. Some children will be selected to take part in booster groups which will take place either a lunchtime or after school. Some children may also receive intervention during the school day.

22 How can you support at home?
Encourage healthy learning habits e.g. independent learning, support in completion of homework. Ensure every piece of homework is completed to a high standard. (initial your child’s homework at the end to acknowledge your child’s effort and ability) Read, read and read again with your child! (development of vocabulary) Use of My Maths resources which school subscribes to enabling access for your child. Use of revision books and websites
